The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up][up] Paula Broadwell. Affair with Petraeus. Apparently had some info that forced Petraeus to resign after the FBI knocked on his door (without knowing it was, you know, his door).

The info in question being that he had an affair. The concern of the FBI was for security: i.e., was Petraeus compromised and leaking secrets? That's a national security investigation which is their job.

The affair is just one of those things that makes American politics get all in a tizzy.

The FBI actually performed warrantless surveillance on Petraeus.
No they didn't. Someone made a complaint that they were being harassed by anonymous emails. Since the internet doesn't respect state boundaries, this falls under the jurisdiction of the FBI. The investigation turned up evidence that it was Paula Broadwell behind he harassment. It also uncovered communication between Broadwell and Petraeus — from Broadwell's end. Petraeus was never under investigation or surveillance. Of course, he might be now, to see what exactly he may have inappropriately revealed to Broadwell, but they weren't looking at Petraeus when evidence of the affair was discovered.

That's an utter tragedy, but Deviant, maybe you should cool it on linking us articles because you're linking things that have increasingly less importance to the topic. Linking articles is nearly all you do.

Link, but also summarize. Broadwell apparently leaked info about the movements of certain generals and other officials to unauthorized people- in those harrassing emails she sent. My guess is she only knew that due to being Patraeus' mistress. That led to his resignation.

@055... I'm just gonna assume that there were already some serious martial/mental issues going down beforehand.

@Re: SOPA guy becoming Sec of State. I doubt that Obama would appoint someone so involved with the Iraq War to such a high level position; especially when there are plenty of qualified Democrats/moderates around who want the job.

Well, Obama already re-appointed one of Bush's most hawkish Drug War associates to head the... Justice Department, I think.

[up][up] Why not? He's already proven to us he has a hawkish neocon foreign policy. Sure, he hasn't really been a troops on the ground sort of president, but that's because he is smarter about his wars than most.

And why would he appoint a man responsible for the most stupid foreign policy commitment in recent American history? Besides he hasn't been listed among the first choices anyway by most of those in the know. Personally I think it will be John Kerry; his Senate seat is rather safely Democratic and he's one of the most experienced Dems in the foreign policy sphere. There are plenty of aggressive/interventionist Democrats he could place in the position anyway; not that I think he's going that direction anyway. He's less of a neocon and more of realist; with the slow withdrawal and the whole "lead from behind" thing in Libya. Plus, Obama is far too multilateral to be a true neocon.

Scott Brown is one of the softer GOP senators, even if I disagree with him on some things. Shame that he ran against Warren who I liked.

No one know yet Obama new secretary of State. it might be SOPA guy, it might be Kerry, or Susan Rice. This article says Rice is Obama choice.

John Brennan is another candidate to replace Petraeus. Brennan was the first Obama administration official to publicly acknowledge the existence of the secret US drone program (part of the GWOT in which UA Vs are used in targeted killing of people in Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, Afghanistan, and elsewhere).

He also helped install the Disposition Matrix database, by which people outside of war zones were put on the list of drone targets.

Rice has to many ties to Benghazi. I think that Obama will want to put that behind him.

[up] Yeah, Brennan has been advising Obama since he was president-elect. He has a good shot for the position.

The Right failed at painting Bengazi as a failure on Obama's part, so I don't think he's going to view that event as particularly shameful and let it influence his appointments too much.

[up][up]Not to get off topic but what happened there? I hear Obama just ignored their calls for help and lied about what caused the attack. Is there any truth to this?
