The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Wow, that steps of fear lady is hardcore libertarian. One person in the comments gave a long comment on ways to reduce our problems and Hoyt basically returned all libertarian talking points and accused the poster of being a government patsy. Eeesh.

Course that author also seems to think that collapse is imminent in Europe.

Collapse is imminent in Europe. They're a panic attack away from a full-on run on the Euro, all thanks to the austerity hawks.

Hardship only has positive effects when it inspires beneficial change; it can just as often provoke knee jerk reactions that only make things worse.

The idea that suffering is a good in and of itself is an idea I find disgusting and perverse.

What if the EU sold Greece to Russia? Would that fix anything?

Misery is definitely not a good thing. However, keeping people in check may be.

[up]Why would Russia buy Greece? I don't see it.

You have a point.

Is there any nation dumb enough to buy Greece?

Sell Greece to Turkey, not Russia. They'd buy it.

@ Braeburn:

Russia wouldn't want Greece anyway. Neither does the Chinese or the Saudis, before you ask.

...all thanks to the austerity hawks.

At this point, Greece is screwed, no matter what it does. But then again, Greece is so fucked up (in ways unrelated to fiscal liberalism versus fiscal conservatism) that only massive intervention can save it, and not of the austerity kind.

@Greenmantle: I answered a bit in the other thread, but yes, the major political parties in Europe have all signed onto the austerity suicide pact. I don't understand it but I can observe it in action.

In regards to the Norquist link: Has this guy ever even had a conversation with Obama? Because he seems awfully sure of what Obama's going to do in regards to taxes despite Obama saying he's going to do the exact opposite.

Maybe that's because Norquist is a bully and holds no office therefore there's no reason for Obama to talk to him at all.

Also someone suggested a plan to bypass the fiscal cliff that I really like. In December the Dems should gear up to pass a bill that cuts taxes on the middle class. The amount it cuts would be the same as the rise due to the expiration of the Bush tax cuts therefore negating any effect the cliff would have. Now if this happens all the Democrats have to do is wait for the cliff to pass and, if the Republicans don't pass the plan, rip into them over allowing the tax rates of the middle class to rise while there was a plan on deck to avert this.

Only 5 House races left (2 in California, 1 in Arizona, 1 in Florida, and 1 in North Carolina).tongue And Allen West is in one of them.

I guess we'll have to watch out for extreme Republican shenanigans here then. If the Republicans don't decide to dial way back on the "evil foreigners" bit.

[up][up][up]Same thing with Arizona and North Carolina according to some places. If Obama won those three in addition to those he kept he'd have 396 electoral votes. That's certainly a mandate in my opinion.
