The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Eh, not really. He ran a bad campaign, and got what was coming to him. This ordeal must've really sucked for his family though, and I feel worse for them since they were just being pulled along for the ride.

The only politicians I really pity are the third-party candidates. They would've killed to get as far as Romney did.

Wow, Ted Nugent is just terrible. I mean really, really terrible.

I feel for Mr. Romney as I would for any person who has had their deeply held convictions destroyed. That said, he is the one who chose to listen to the wrong people and the wrong advice, and I completely disagree with his political opinions... if he even has any.

I don't really feel bad about it. He ran, he lost. Perhaps now the republicans will take a look at their priorities and reivent themselves because I gotta be honest, the democrats ain't too great but right now they're the only sane group in america.

I honestly do feel bad for Romney. You devote tons of resources and time into an election, with people who honestly believe in you. They honestly believe you can make a difference. But you failed. You lost. All that time and money is gone. All that will be made of you in history is a footnote.

Romney has his family that will always love him. His wife, his sons, and his grandchildren. I wish him many happy years in the future.

So far, much of what's getting pumped out by Republican Leadership and Pundits seems to indicate they think doubling down on their policies for 2008~2012 are a really cool and neat idea. Except maybe Immigration. And possibly use Marco Rubio to capture Latinos in 2016 (though even that might be a backfire, since he could easily be considered a Tea Party shill due to the timing of his election.)

so far the noise I've been seeing has veen "double down and well if we put a brown face on the wrapper latinos will totes join us even if we dont stop with the rhetoric about lazy poor people"

Basically they think minorities are shallow and are only voting for another minority candidate because it makes them feel better. While some do probably think that way saying the majority are like that strikes me as pretty foolish.

It also completely ignores how racist it is to suppose that minorities are too stupid to vote on anything except race, and therefore pisses minorities off via implication.

Well, Romney ran a heavily racially charged campaign, attempting to maximise his share of "the white vote" at the expense of "the black vote" and "the Latino vote". That proved to be a massive strategical error - but regardless of whether it worked or not, I think it was a wrong thing to do. So I don't pity the man at all. If you tried to win by such means, and you lost, then you got what was coming to you.

(Quotation marks added because I still object to the notion of votes being determined by ethnicity).

I will laugh so hard if the GOP tries to market Rubio like he's Enrique Iglesias in 2016 (assuming that's who they go with).

To be faire. thats the rhetoric the right goes with altogether. "Taking "Our" country back" "Real Americans" etc. as though non-republicans are some sort of evil usurpers.

And non-Christians.

Although most of they time, they act like that particular group of people doesn't even exist. They don't even consider that some of us think it's pretty freaking weird that multiple candidates last election cycle said they were chosen directly by God to run for office.

I dont imagine theyre evil. I think of them the same way I do of christians in my home town. Well meaning and absolutely too set in their ways to realize when theyre saying something highly offensive and racially charged.

It continues to amaze me how credulously some of you buy into the "conservatives are White Supremacists seeking to institute a fascist theocracy" scare mongering even though you readily see the dubiousness of "liberals are socialists seeking to institute an Orwellian Big Brother state" rhetoric.

There's some really serious cultural conflicts going on in our country right now, but this sort of sensationalism and inability to see the other side's point of view is not going to do anything to mend matters.

@Grizz: I'm basing that off of Republicans that I know personally. I know that my family really wouldn't mind if there was a theocratic takeover.

Sometimes I begin to think that I live in some sort of twilight zone where everybody is magically more nice and reasonable than they are everywhere else. Yet the people I hang out with are, as far as I can tell, exactly who you are referring to much of the time in this thread: white, deeply religious rural southerners.

@grizzly: I dont think theyre theocrats waiting to take over. I think they really dont realize that making quips about welfare queens and 'You voted for obama because you're black/want foodstamps" is like telling a poor black person that their starving children dont fucking matter .

And then they even trot out the occasional Black republiocan as though this proves their party doesnt harbor racist sentiments.

It just comes off as either willfully racist or fucking clueless.

@ Grizzly: ten bucks says theyre nice to you because you share at least some of their views. if I told them I wasnt christian and voted for Obama, I'd wager at best theyd tell me they would "pray for my soul"
