The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It'd be a long-overdue shake-up, I think. The past 15 years have been... weird.

I wouldn't mind a RINO/DINO party as a replacement. They'd be much less insane than the current GOP and would allow us to get stuff done.

Wait, if we had a RINO/DINO party, their political animal whatever could either be a rhinoceros or a dinosaur.

Either one would be badass.

A rhinocersaur or a dinoceros?

A Triceratops is pretty much a Dinosaur version of a Rhino so I'd go with that.

edit: Or they could use a Wooly Rhino. It's an extinct Rhino so it's kind of like a dinosaur (okay not really but it's still cool looking).

Woolly Rhino: ancient... and flipping massive. Bit extinct, though. Dunno how good an extinct mascot would actually be.

Meh, the vice president's foot in mouth disease has been greatly exaggerated. People are not memes - though you wouldn't know that from political caricatures.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you there, I love Joe, but he does have a habit of saying stupid crap.

This is my favorite Bidenism:

Look, John's last-minute economic plan does nothing to tackle the number-one job facing the middle class, and it happens to be, as Barack says, a three-letter word: jobs. J-O-B-S, jobs."

So about the blog post I linked earlier...

I asked about carbon taxes in the comments, and someone else responded with this:

They cannot “work” because there is nothing for them to “work” on. Anthropogenic Global Warming is a farce, so carbon taxes cannot affect the temperature of the Earth. If you don’t believe this, then either you have a lot of reading to catch up on, or else there is no point. If you are interested, then go to wattsupwiththat.com and read through the archives there.

They will, however, make things worse, by raising the cost of energy and making it harder on those with less money, trying to pay for their heating bills. If you are looking for evidence that they are increasing AGW, then see the previous paragraph.

I don't remember this forum's general opinion on global warming, but I need to check that website.

This is extensive. Here's a summary of that megapost's conclusion:

I should make it clear that I’m not doubting that CO 2 has a positive radiative heating effect in our atmosphere, due to LWIR re-radiation, that is well established by science. What I am saying is that Mr. Gore’s Climate Reality Project did a poor job of demonstrating an experiment, so poor in fact that they had to fabricate portions of the presentation, and that the experiment itself (if they actually did it, we can’t tell) would show a completely different physical mechanism than what actually occurs in our atmosphere.

[up][up] I think most of us agree that global climate change is happening, and some if it is partly due to human activity.

Also, yes, modern energy-efficient measures do disproportionately hit the lower-middle class and below, but at the same time, the government had introduced programs to help with that. Out here we have the Opportunity Council, which will go through your house, and suggest the most cost-effective ways to repair your home and make it more "green", and if you're below a certain income level, they'll pick up some of the cost. Also, installing energy efficient appliances and weatherizing your home in certain ways are sometimes covered under tax deductions at a federal level, depending on what you do.

And so on.

[up][up][up] That's strawman politics. Whether or not Gore did a credible job of demonstrating CO2 warming has no bearing on whether said warming is in fact occurring, which is now a fact as solidly established as evolution and almost as solid as gravity.

That this is even a matter of debate is sickening; it's people taking political stances on fundamental science. The conversation should be what to do about it, not whether it's happening.

I can't remember the last time in school that science class covered global warming. I can understand why it's so easy to be misinformed in this area, regardless of either direction.

I lament the fact that you can't get both sides to directly debate in a rational and civil way. Even among us, and sometimes in non-political topics, we tend to talk in circles and misread each other. It's no wonder that the two sides stay separate. Biases and knowledge and personal experience and all that.

How is a teenager supposed to make a strong stance on politics when millions of older people have weaker ones?

[up][up][up] Honestly, by doing what you're doing right now. Question things, look for actual answers and not just taking what they tell you at face value. If there's a disagreement about what the law does, dig up a copy of the law itself and read it. If people are arguing about climate change, get copies of peer-reviewed studies and look at the evidence yourself.

Stuff like that. It's the only way we'll get more informed voters.

The Long Line Outside Romney's Door and His New Message to Supporters

Eating pizza out of the box? This electoral defeat has clearly not left Mitt in the best of spirits.

I can't help but remember what Mitt said after he lost the Massachusetts Senate Election of 1994:

, "I never want to run for something again unless I can win."

Does anyone else feel somewhat bad for ol' Mittens?
