The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I kinda want to sign that secession petition just to see what the White House will say in the response they promise on 25k signatures.

The US could just do what we did in the civil war. "Sure we'll let you secede. You just have to repel the national guard and the army otherwise we'll invade."

None of those things would make Obama look especially good, though, and considering that the whole petetion website is essentially a giant PR stunt I imagine they'd put a nicer spin on it than that.

Anything Obama does would make him look bad to a specific group of people. I was mostly joking though. Honestly if he really wanted to punish them he could just let them secede and deny reentry once they realize they can't function autonomously. I'm not saying he should do that though it's just one option he could take if he wants to prove a point.

edit: Put it this way. If they're not part of the union they get no help from the federal government. All we'd have to do is wait for the next Katrina to come along and make them realize they won't have FEMA to bail them out this time.

Personally, if they get a million votes, I'd sit up and take notice. But 25,000 isn't even worth mentioning. You could find that many people who want to secede in any state. Besides, didn't Texas almost go blue this year? It wasn't real close, but it was closer than it's ever been.

My opinion - Let these scum secede - hey don't deserve to call themselves Americans at this point with how they are dragging this nation down, anyway - that goes for everyone who thinks like this and is a Southerner. They have NO place here holding our nation back from making real progress, as far as i'm concerned.

While they're at it, take South Carolina with you - I need to go to a state that will actually offer me healthcare when I need it, anyway. Not when I'm in the emergency room dying because these rich/corporate fuckers want me to, just because I don't have as much fame or money as them - fuck them, at least I have common sense to know that moneyt and fame are just shields from the truth that they are part of the problem for not helping out their fellow man/woman in his/her actual time of need.

The less Southerner/Conservative scum to hold back progress in America, the better. That's the COLD. HARD. TRUTH!

[up]Yeah but what about the people that don't want to secede? Should they just be forced to suffer?

[up]True progress and justice come from suffering and learning the truth through that suffering. And by being forced to, they are learning how to fight for true freedom and democracy that most Southerners lack, due to a decent lack of proper education and healthcare access, to name examples.

What I'm saying is, if these Southerners can't get rid of idiots like this, they deserve to be humiliated on a regular basis for not acting fast and fighting accordingly to stamp out such idiocy, especially when it comes from those in power over them.

You seem to be overestimating how many people actually feel this way. 25k nuts is nothing in a state that has a population of several million.

[up]...And I'm thankful for that, but still... These Southerners need to accpet that their ideals are a failure and must be treated as such.

And every day that we can confirm this failure, accept it, and fight back against those holding us back, is one step forward, not just for the South, but for this nation as a whole.

If any state were to secede, Louisiana wouldn't be the optimal one. Most of the South west of the Mississippi is substantially bluer than the rest of the South. Not enough to vote for a non-Southern Democrat, but...

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#39691: Nov 11th 2012 at 8:14:12 AM

Okay I would only support secession under the following conditions:

1. The state that wishes to secede must provide transport out of state for all those that do not wish to remain in the state afterwards.

2. The state must not attack the US or any of its territories or otherwise impair their ability to function. Doing so will constitute an act of aggression.

3. No federal aid will be given no matter what circumstances. If they desire to be isolationist they must fully commit to it.

4. If, after 5 years, the state wishes to rejoin the US they will be permitted to do so provided they sign a treaty stating they will never secede again and promise to reimburse any who might have been financially burdened by their decision.

edit: Forgot one.

5. If the state comes under attack from an outside force they will not be granted aid from the federal government in any manner unless they agree to rejoin the Union.

Hey, what do you guys think of this blog post?

I don’t think there is time. Because they believed the “othering” of conservatives (and calling us conservatives is hilarious, since most of us are so far out of power it’s not even funny, and want to change society as it is now completely – and before the ladyparts kick in – towards greater freedom of individual action) they voted for the hardest financial landing a country ever had. This would be true even if the administration weren’t doubling down on stupid with things like carbon taxes (an unproven solution to a nebulous problem, but guaranteed to destroy whatever industry remains in the continental US, at this time.) On top of that, while I’ve lived through a slo-mo financial collapse before, it was in a country that was getting so much money from the IMF we could all have landed on it from the top of mount Everest and survived. There is no cushion for the US. We ARE the cushion.

But people voted for this because they didn’t want to align themselves with racist/sexist/homophobes, like all my gay conservative friends, like the black family who was working phones for Romney alongside the rest of us, like the Philippine lady at the Romney rally crying hysterically and saying that the other guy couldn’t win, because he’s going to destroy us all. Like ALL the women who gave their all to prevent this, because they don’t want their children and grandchildren to live in indentured servitude to the government. (No? What do you call it when someone is forced to perform actions/provide services because the government tells them to, and won’t let them leave? Do you even know that under this administration, if you have unpaid student loans you can’t leave the country? No, not even if that’s your only chance to find a job and pay the loans. What would you call that? You’ve become a serf, attached to the land. You didn’t know? Why not?)

On a concrete level, I'll like you guys' opinions on carbon taxes and if you can't leave the country if you have unpaid student loans.

On a more abstract level, on the "othering" of conservatives, and female, PoC, and LGBT Republicans.

[up][up][up]I actually don't expect any state can actually do 1. 3 and 4 are just there so that if they actually do achieve that they'll soon realize what a ridiculous mistake they made.

I am pretty sure that most countries with carbon taxes have no such problems. And a "nebulous problem" - nope.

I'd say both sides do the "othering" after all, Conservatives dont seem to get it when you know, they go "oh look. we have black people who vote conservative, therefore we're a postracial party!"

For the sake of what little good reputation my poor-ass state has left, I will note that twenty five thousand people is less than one percent of our total population. Pretty sure you could find at least that many blatantly stupid people in any state at any given time. And yes, it is especially ironic considering how dependent we are on government intervention to weather (haw) local environmental disasters. All you have to do is drive down one bumpy, pothole-filled road here to understand why relying on private industry and/or the state government just isn't gonna cut it. We still have major buildings left from Katrina that are abandoned, vine-covered ghosts of architecture.

Re: that blog post, if you don't want to turn it into a 'let's nitpick this all day' thing, you're probably going to want to elaborate on how much of it you agree with and how much of it you disagree with, and why, Chihuahua.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

[up] I linked it because it's a rare thing to encounter a conservative opinion in the crowds I hang out with.

Also, an observation I make for both sides: Sometimes concrete evidence is brought up, sometimes it's not. This blog post lacks blue links and hard data, but those certain two points I quoted to stood out because I haven't seen anyone talking about them.
