The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

It matters insofar as it shows just how right Nate Silver was.

And I echo Jon Stewart in saying how grateful I am that, for once, Florida's election results didn't matter.

Yeah, Nate Silver went 50 for 50 on calling states.

Yet some kids in my school still like Dick Morris. Ugh...

edit: Two things.

1. How did Silver do on other things like congress seats and governorships?

2. When are we going to find out who won the other seven or so house seats that have been uncalled?

[up]1. 31 for 33 on Senate seats, didn't predict House or Governors.

2. How should we know?

1. Not perfect but pretty good results. He's now worth trusting if he's gotten three almost perfect runs in a row.

2. I was wondering if anybody read something that said when some states expected to be finished counting.

[up] And one of those that he got "wrong" he only gave a 62% chance of winning. He did really well.

Cool.

So which polling place was closest? From what I can tell ABC/Wash Post was only .3-.4 off which seems pretty good compared to other places.

Hah, Romney got 47.9% of the popular vote. Close enough. That's why I was asking. :P

It might drop to 47.5 when all the polls report in.

I suspect it is similar to cultural acceptance of gays, and it will just be one of those things that will come as soon as the old people die off.

You don't need to wait for that. Just wait until the current generation gets control of the media and government. I give it fifteen years.

What would REALLY help is:

Marujania was switched from Schedule I to anything else. But again, that requires Congress to be useful and not be a bunch of dumbfucks on both sides. And for the US to get over its love affair with the War on Drugs.

Again, I'd say the issue here isn't whether you want marijuana outlawed or not, but whether it's a good idea for a President to be able to say, "Yeah, I don't like this law; I'm not gonna enforce it." That kinda seems like one of those overreaches of executive power people are always talking about.

My point is simply that winning slightly over half of the vote entitles you to pursue your agenda. It does not entitle you to whine about the "will of the people" when the slightly less than half of the population who don't share your agenda oppose you.

Yet somehow Bush had a mandate when he won less of electoral vote AND he lost the popular vote.

That and with his temporary amnesty order and having the government no longer prosecute on DOMA, do that and detractors might as well call him the Hippie President.

When have I ever said that Bush had a mandate for anything?

All presidents, by virtue of being elected, have a mandate to govern effectively. There are no other mandates.

All this talk about mandate has me imagining a He-Man-esque Obama holding a sword shouting "I have the mandate." in front of a castle greyskull backdrop.
