Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Colorado and Washington laws would treat marijuana much like alcohol and tobacco, setting the stage for a large scale, tightly regulated, and generously taxed commercial industry worth some untold millions of dollars. Simply put, these would be the most lax marijuana laws in the world — smack dab in the middle of the country that invented the modern drug war.
The big question now is: Will Obama let it happen?
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Someone show him research on all the tax revenue it would bring, and remind him what it would be like to be the NEXT Democratic president who gave us a surplus after an enormous deficit.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.I think that Obama's reaction is going to be "let's pretend that this isn't in violation of pre-empting federal law by not doing anything about it except to prevent it from spilling out". Clinton did something similar when California enacted similar permissions.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanHere's what'll happen. They will sue to block parts of the Marijuana legalization measures, send threatening letters to Marijuana shops (seizure of property and arrest, namely), perform street-level clampdowns (even though Marijuana is legal in those states) and send warning letters to the state governors.
Now, the Colorado and Washington Governors are Democrats who opposed the measure to legalize Marijuana, but since it has been legalized, they said that they will enforce it. Let's see if they do so.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Bush: I earned political capitol from this campaign and I intend to spend it
.
He only had 282 Electoral College votes back at 2004. Yet he claims that he has "the will of the American people" in that video.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Nate Silver has some interesting statistics here.
Apparently only Ohio and Florida had a smaller Obama victory than the national average. Looking at this he could have even lost Virginia and still won. Basically the Republicans might have a ton of strongholds in a lot of states but if the Democratic candidates continue to perform in this manner they don't even need those states to consistently win.
Go to the 1:16 minute mark on this video
and stop watching at 1:37. It's about then-Senator Obama claiming that he won't go after states that legalize pot.
Try practicing what you're preaching, Mister President.

I'm not talking about state vs federal law. I'm talking about Obama failing to lie up to his promise about, as conservatives would say, "respecting states rights". I mean, look at Clinton - he only tried to make sure legalization didn't happen in any state, instead of actively cracking down on them.

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl. No, you're missing my point. You went ahead and made a bold prediction based on your conceptions of who Obama is, that his administration is going to step up the War on Drugs in objection to the states simply legalizing marijuana. What I'm saying is, if it turns out you're wrong-if he doesn't pursue the issue-are you going to re-evaluate your views on Obama in regards to the drug war.

Agreed.
Besides, let's be honest with ourselves: we're just now starting to win against regressives; we've got a long way to go before we can compete with the conservatives ideology that is so embedded in this country. Yes, this was a good election for progressives, but let's not go overboard with the celebration just yet. If we can get to the point where people like Obama are no longer seen as the radical left, then maybe we can really get somewhere.
