Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Libertarianism has some interesting ideas but falls apart when you add the human element. Instead I'll stay a liberal with some rather extreme ideas about freedom.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Do you know who coined the term "Fiscal Cliff?" Where it's basically a warning to Washington on not to raise taxes?

In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Midget: Te comprende bien; soy Dominicano. My father is an upper-middle class fiscal conservative, a Massachusetts Republican who hates Bush and absolutely loathes Romney. I thought he was an isolated case, then I read those comments.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Obama just won the election by an unbelievably large margin, as far as the Electoral College is concerned. He has no political pressure, because the Republicans shot themselves in the foot with how terrible the results were for them in the Senate and White House. He can make the GOP look unreasonable if they obstruct again. The polls are on his side, regarding tax raises and not cutting the social programs.
And yet, he'll blow all of that straight out of the window if he does the Grand Bargain, especially during the lame-duck session, where he has less Democratic Congressmen.
In RWBY, every girl is Best Girl.Well, the article I'm reading, and it was linked earlier in the thread, says he's determined that the whole raising of taxes on the rich thing is non-negotiable. Here's to hoping he keeps to his guns.
Here it is again for those that missed it.
Krugman's article says it's not that bad, really, because there aren't immediate effects. There's more time to turn things around, even after the date. So it's not like we hit bottom right away. And it hurts their interests as much or more than ours if we go past it. So. Guess it's time for Obama and the Dems to play political chicken? Iunno. It's a tricky situation.

It can help to prove that things like Social Security won't go bankrupt. And, perhaps, be the start of curing our politics of the "no taxes ever" rhetoric. We can only do a little at a time, Serroco.
