The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up][up]How? The GOP will just refuse to pass it.

edit: Okay are they ever going to call the last ~10 house seats? I'd like to know whether or not the Democrats gained any seats this time around.

@Kostya: The Dems have a PR wing too, you know. And this time, we're fired up and ready to go.

On that note, the Democrats have made a net pickup of at least +1.

To reply to the link to Krugman, I get the awful feeling that if Obama did that, it would backfire horrendously.

[up]That's my thinking. The GOP are already losing ground. It's best if we don't botch it right now.

Well, of course it would. That's something you have to spin REALLY HARD to not look bad, even when what you've just done is the right thing.

But Krugman is right in that long run, it would hurt the Republicans as much as the Democrats. And I do agree that Obama needs to dig his heels in a little or else the Republicans will continue to jerk him and this country around.

Obama has a minimum of two years to pull off a principled stand against GOP economic terrorism, if only he has the balls to try.

This reminds me of a supposed FDR quote along the lines of "Ma'am, I'd like to. But you must make me."

Fuck it. Do it. Time to double down.

Call the Republicans bluff. One of two things happens, either we lose it all, or the GOP dies. Horribly.

My point is that the GOP is self destructing already. Why risk botching things at this stage?

No, but their candidates are too invested in their belief that America is either secretly a truly conservative nation, or that it is a conservative nation that has been usurped by the lazy and immoral

How do we know Obama and the Democrats wont get the blame for falling odnw the fiscal cliff?

Republicans are nothing if not good at shifting blame.

On this link Braeburn posted: Holy crap, look at the comments. I mean, usually that's a bad idea, but look at these comments. Conservative Latinos are savaging Rubio.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Wow. Appears to be a lot of traditionally Republican voters who jumped ship because of all the damned nonsense.

I can't say I've ever cared much for Libertarianism, ever since I met that one guy back when I was on the Ubi forums as a teenager. They tend to come off to me as more or less selfishness in a human shelf, and far more dangerous than a neocon as a result.

If you wanna know why, its pretty simple. Latinos do kind of consider themselves all brothers and sisters. Theyre very community-oriented (I know. half my family IS MEXICAN)

And given how much the republican party has made it very plain that they hate latinos, why on earth would shoving a republican with latino skin color influence us to vote for the people who even view those of us here legally as "invaders" ?

It looks to me like if Republicans want to stay in the game, they are going to have to do more then blow hot air in regards to Latino voters, actual compromise has to be brought to the table on key issues for the Republicans to hold onto to power in The House, and more then that Latino voters are going to be looking for a clear ethnic leader-not a Tea Party puppet and figure head-in the GOP if they want success. If Susana Martinez weren't both a women and pretty much a centrist, I would be worried about the GOP scrambling to put her front and center, but since she is, she's not very likely to climb high in the ranks.

[up]

The thing is, if Republicans want any hope of remaining in power, they have to appeal to Latinos. And the best way to do that is through a figure head.

[up][up] There's enough overlap between right-wing libertarianism and Objectivism for it to be pretty much the same thing.

Libertarians form a lot of their political philosophy on Objectivism, Deviant. So while very much not the same thing, they do have quite a bit in common.

@ L Mage: I understand that. My point is, Latinos arent lazy wetbacks who no habla ingles. Theyre not stupid. If all they plan on doing is throwing Rubio out there and expect latinos to vote Republican, theyre sorely mistaken, because all Rubio really represents to a lot of non-cuban latinos is a fancy figurehead for an organization that at best wants to pretend it cares about us.
