The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Glad to see Ron Paul saying horribly stupid things as always. His anti-war rhetoric is nice, but it's important to keep him in perspective.

Okay was Romney just incredibly delusional? It literally sounds like he could not imagine a world in which he could lose despite it being the logical outcome.

I fucking hate Ron Paul and his adherents. They're basically market anarchists which are one of the most dangerous groups in my opinion.

Well, I feel bad for his family. But Romney himself? No.

And Paul makes me cringe because everytime he says something spot on regarding civil liberties or war, he has to fuck it up by saying things like this on domestic policy.

I have to say, its almost sad editorials like this one get published in actual papers.

Krugman to the invisible bond vigilantes: Bring it on! According to his math (and he has not been wrong in a significant way thus far), a run on bond prices would be expansionary for the economy by devaluing the dollar and increasing exports.

The premise of the article-that Romney ran a single-issue campaign-is just flat out wrong.

I particularly 'liked' how the guy put the 'marriage' part of 'gay marriage' in quotemarks.

It's amazing how hateful trivial grammar tweaks can be.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Okay so after reading about one hundred comments on the article Deviant posted about Ron Paul I am convinced that the Libertarians are an even bigger threat than the GOP. Dear God the lunacy of those people...ugh. I pray they never get power.

They wont. Not without a major mass defection from the current Republican party.

[up][up][up]Well what else do you think is going to happen when the GOP goes down in flames? Hopefully the Greens get power but given the lunacy of so many people the Libertarians will probably become the next major party.

[up][up]What...

Seriously? Why do they have any readers at all?

Libertarians as a whole seem to refuse to believe that businesses and their CEOS (particularly ones like Wal-Mart) can be just as if not far more predatory and aggressive against their employees and the public as the government can ever be. And their good positions are covered by other parties like the Democrats, Socialists, or Greens.

[up][up]Indeed. I don't like when a government goes and restricts personal freedoms but there are certain things that need to be regulated otherwise businesses can just abuse their workers, the environment, and the government with no recourse. How any sane person would prefer an unrestrained private enterprise having absolute power to a government that is (in theory) accountable is just idiocy.

I'm not sure if I like Krugman's idea. What if it backfires and people get so fed up that they elect a Republican majority in 2014 or 2016?

Better an actual Republican in office than letting the Republicans have their way when they lose elections.

I for one am not willing to give in to political blackmail.

I'm curious, does anybody know of a place I can look at that will tell me how much extra revenue certain tax rates will generate? I've been curious about this recently.

edit: Obama has to be really careful with how he handles this PR disaster in the making if he doesn't do anything about the cliff. I don't care if he's blackmailed. A double-dip recession is not worth it since it just means we'll lose everything in 14 and 16.

@Kostya: There will be a number of weeks or months in which the tax increases will not immediately become interesting. Obama could push through a balanced (read: not GOP) plan during that time period.
