The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Sure, the rich guys prefer the Republicans, but let's be real here - the Democrats are still funded by lobbyist and banker money. It's just that the more vocal plutocrats are preferring the GOP.

A pity they didn't use their votes for a real opposing candidate.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

Republicans wouldn't purposefully drive us over the Fiscal Cliff so they could avoid taking the blame for breaking their "No cutting tax breaks!" oath...right?

and another of Dubya's advisers proves she is sane and her party needs to change.

I especially love the part where she points out one of the major reasons women sure as hell wouldnt vote Republican was "legitimate rape"

(which seriously, even my pro-tea party religious friends thought made him absolutely not worth voting for)

Well, if you have to protest against an unchallenged candidate, that's a pretty funny way to do it. Too bad they didn't have a currently living person to vote for, though.

#39358: Nov 9th 2012 at 10:42:54 AM

One of those 4,000 people should have run if they wanted to actually change anything.

You're discounting the expense and extreme difficulty of someone with no political history getting in on those things. Particularly at a state level election. Frankly, I'm impressed someone organized that many people to vote on a position with no challenger anyway.

It's always easy to say that someone should have done something when there's nothing for you personally at stake.

Could progressive independents stand a chance in these southern Red constituencies where everyone hates the Democrats?

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

Most likely not. For one, Republican stranglehold means you need a strong support system to break through. Plus, if you hate the Democrats you probably hate the progressive independents just as much. Seriously, democrats get accused of being socialists so what makes you think someone who identifies as progressives stands a better chance than a democrat in those places?

I got a question though. Why does anyone consider Libertarians as separate from the Republicans when Libertarians vote so closely with the Republicans anyway? For practical purposes it seems they're the same anyway. Hell, even on issues where they agree with the Democrats they vote the way of Republicans. (Democrats are more likely to be for legalizing various drugs, for instance. Colorado was probably smart to put that on the ballot separate from party issues, really.)

As far as I can tell, Libertarian just seems to be this decade's favored nametag for political hipsters who like to pretend they're above the fray in theory while in actual voting and policy practices still being as partisan as you can get. It's a way to have your cake and eat it too.

Its a pity David Frum is considered a RINO by half his party these days. because I think this essay sums up everything pretty damned well. Essay by him from his latest book, where he argues the republicans shouldnt go centrist or go further right. They need to toss out policies that plain dont work and adapt to the modern day.

http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2012/11/11/how-the-republicans-got-stuck-in-the-past.html?obref=obinsite

Its kind of sad. He's one of the few republicans that I think ever makes any sense while still favoring conservative policies, and because of it, it falls on deaf ears.

also, one of his blog posts I think is the most succint explanation of whats wrong with republican strategy.

"It's necessary of course to refrain from insulting Latinos, or, for that matter, anybody. But the crying need in the GOP is for a more middle-class orientation to politics, one that addresses concerns like healthcare as well as debts and deficits. But the ideas that dominated the past four years won't become more attractive if all conservatives do is translate them into Spanish."

Yep. Ebook. From the looks of it he had it written up and ready to go the moment the election ended, because he's been pointing out these problems for YEARS and already suspected heavily Romney was going to lose horrifically.

In short. He's a horrible traitor to the right for writing mainly for a "liberal" website like Daily Beast and for giving huge amounts of arguments why the tea party brand of convervativism is poisonous to the party,

@Grizzly: Some probably can't because they're under 25. I know that age is all that's stopping me from running for political office. Fucking age limits.

I'd run if I had the money, was old enough, and wasn't, well... me, I guess. tongue

And Frum was spot on. It's odd because there's been less (well, a little less) excuses coming from the right-wing than I expected. Even Limbaugh isn't pointing fingers at Sandy or something like that; he has instead admitted that Republicans are simply losing ground and becoming outnumbered.

I would need to become a better public speaker. And figure out how to reconcile running for office with being the primary breadwinner in my household.

@Hilarity: the problem though, is a lot of them admit they are outnumbered..and seem relegated to shrug and keep going anyhow rather than allow themselves to "morally decline" to win.

They dont see changing america as a thing to change with, they see it as something to rail against for not being as "moral" as them.

I heard some CEOs fired their workers after Obama was re-elected.

Can't say I didn't expect it. They were pretty adamant about doing so.
