Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I suspect that the fiscal cliff will be "averted" by an eleventh hour resolution that punts it down the road a few months, until after the inauguration and hence the end of the lame duck session.
@Starship Maxima: Your type of conservatism is the kind we need in this country. Not the kind that is espoused by folks like Rove, Trump, and this Libertarian dude that wants to shit on people's lawns.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"No, Maxima... You and Grizzly still have conservative values... You're just actually sane about them. That makes you two different from most of what those on the left have seen from the Republican Party.
Wizard Needs Food BadlySo, speaking of that kind of conservatism, I linked to this earlier
but I think it got missed in the post-election talk.
The comments on that website are even better. Dondero launches into multiple rants about how Democrats hate Ayn rand and how america is made of moochers and socialists and needs to be educated in why liberty is good if they ever want to win again.
Also they seem convinced within 3 years the northeast will be taken over by a new Nazi regime.

Smith & Wesson, Gunmakers Rally After Obama Re-Elected
In order for the Republicans to hold onto the Congress in the coming election they are going to need to been seen working hard and compromising on SOMETHING. Because if the image of "Republican stone walling the Democrats and president, making change impossible" holds then they don't have a hope in hell of maintain the majority.
The problem is if they DO compromise on something, then they risk pissing off their base, screwing them over anyways. It's gotten to be a loss-loss.
Romney's being slapped with a lawsuit for profiteering from the auto bailout and not disclosing it during the electoral campaign.

@Deviant: Department of Human Services. It varies from state to state on exactly what they do, but in general they handle things like the WIC program, food stamps, unemployment services, disability services, child protection services, foster care, adoption, etc.
@Hilarity: Well, Republicans keep talking about how much they hate people on food stamps.

"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -DrunkscriblerianSo what's the Fiscal Cliff about? From what I understand, it's basically ending the Bush tax cuts and cutting the military budget and other stuff if congress don't come up with something by 2013. Is it really that devastating?
Re: Chris Christie. Is he trying to run for 2016 as a Dem.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016If affirmative action is based on socioeconomic status, then it kind of ends up being race-based anyway. Just sayin'.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

yeah. pretty much all that article said to me was "BLABLABLAH DECRY REPUBLICAN STRATEGY AND HOW ITS PERVERTED REAGANISM WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY PERVERTING THE FUCK OUT OF REAGAN EVEN FURTHER SHAMELESSLY"
