Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Maxima: yes. One of Romney's Biggest flaws was that even without Obama's help,. he never quite came off as someone who understood the pains and tribulations of the average person.
When you're running against someone like Obama who even if you dont like his politics, can come off as a caring human being who wants your life to be happy, you are toast if you cannot break the image of that.
Its why Dubya won originally. He had the same quality as Obama of being a guy you wouldnt mind hanging out with and talking with even if you disagree with him politically.
@ Potatoes: lots of tea Party aligned congressmen were summarily thrown out of office on tuesday night. Their coalisition isnt quite as strong as it was now.

John Boehner: ‘Raising tax rates is unacceptable’
So basically Boehner is willing to talk about the possibility of raising tax rates but is still sternly opposed to actually doing so.
In Boehner's own words:
“Of course, we’ll talk about it. We talk about all kinds of things we may disagree on,” Boehner said. “I’m the most reasonable, responsible person here in Washington. The president knows it. He knows that he and I can work together. The election’s over. Now it’s time to get to work.”
I just love how he describers himself as 'the most reasonable, responsible person here in Washington.'

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Honestly, after two terms of Bush, a Romney victory would inspire little more than a Here We Go Again! kind of reaction from me.
And that tumblr is just ridiculous. I don't think every Republican is like that, but all the people who think Obama's somehow destroyed America are incredibly delusional.
It's not about Republican vs Democrat for me, in this case. It's about realizing that Obama, Bush, etc are flawed human beings and you cannot act as though they're these creatures made from pure malevolence if you want anyone to take you seriously.

Thorn, if Obama had simply said "Look gang, even in a Recession, we're living pretty damn good. But some of your brothers and sisters aren't, and they dropping dead for lack of coverage. I'm telling you to kick in extra to support them," I'd have gotten a "Obamacare 4 Life!" tatoo the same day.
As a staunch defender of individual freedom, I resent the government mandate. Call it a tax and be done with it.
It was an honorI do. But I want the President and be honest and say "Look, we're demanding you kick in a little extra if you're not insured, since if you're not and you need services, it'll be a burden on the rest." See, I can work with that. That's the kind of socialism that right-wingers can get down with.
When you say "penalty", it starts to sound uncomfortably like a nanny-state. I don't like nanny-states.
It was an honorTim Pawlenty: Election 'warning signs' for GOP
It seems Pawlenty is (happily) ending his career as a politician.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Someone better than me with health insurance can explain why everyone has to be integrated or else the system won't work.
Christie calls Obama to congratulate, emails Romney condolences
...What is Christie up to?
Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016In possibly the most amusing hissyfit yet, former Ron Paul aide Eric Dondero has decided to react to the election by boycotting democrats forever.
In other words, refusing to talk to anyone he knows is a democrat ever again, any music by a democrat, possibly vandalizing any property owned by a democrat. refusing to watch any tv show or radio affiliated with a democrat, and even would pause before saving a democrat from falling off a bridge unless he said "Obama sucks" first.

John Boehner: 'Obamacare is the law of the land'
@Jovian, Trivialis, Potatoes Rock - Honestly, I see what the President was doing. I mean it when I say I admire the hell out of Obamacare.
The concept that those of us who have plenty should kick in a little more so that the lesser fortunate might be taken care of as well is a pinnacle value of the religious right.
(Pause) How horrifying is it that many Republicans would call me a Socialist for suggesting that Obamacare is very much a right-wing, conservative, sound financial policy minus some poorly worded language?
It was an honor
Thats kind of the sad part about the party in general, maxima. A once noble group of people has been taken over by people who seriously believe in every lie theyve been feeding themselves for years.
Its reached a point where discourse is near impossible because "compromise is democrats coming over to our side"
or as that article I just link shows. Some people simply think the mature way to handle a loss is to treat the other side with nothing but contempt and hatred.

Rubio to headline fundraiser for Iowa governor
Maybe the Liberal left can help the religious Right regain its more noble self; but remind us that we lose nothing by sharing our wealth, that disagreeing with us doesn't vacate your rights, that we're stronger together rather than apart.
Hope and Change, basically.
God help me, TV Tropes is going to turn me into a Leftie.

It was an honor

Irrelevant. People will forget all about the Fiscal Cliff by 2016~
The real question is whether or not the hypothesis that "the electorate is different in mid-term elections" is true. If so, the Dems seriously need to step up their ground game in 2014.
