The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I feel bad for the people who thought Romney would bring them prosperity.

[up]Same. I also feel bad for Fox News viewers in a way. They must have been so certain they had this. Not Fox itself though. They can stew in their sorrow for all I care.

Right, the folks who work at and operate Fox News knew damn well what they were doing, or should have. Their viewers are the victims. Willing victims, but victims all the same.

Possibly. I sympathize with them because I felt the same way when Obama won the first time.

That part I can understand if they believe Obama's the antichrist or his victory is going to be the death of this country.

He has way too much respect/infamy in political circles to not bounce back from this though. Short of a Charlie Sheen style breakdown anyway.

After this failure, he'll have a big job convincing anyone to keep giving him money. Remember, he has also made himself look like a fool on Fox News.

Didn't Rove have something like a 13% return on his investment of around 300 million dollars? Yeah, I think any intelligent person would tell him to go away if he asked for money again.

For everyone mocking Republicans because precisely one guy got up on Fox News and threw a hissy fit, and because many more voiced their displeasure their guy lost...I have a question.

You're so certain you guys would've been the beacons of graciousness and reason if Romney had won? No Democrat would've taken to Facebook to talk about how America is becoming a white man's dictatorship of women haters or something like that?

Do you believe that?

... Thankfully the one hope I can say is that the Republicans are going to have to probably come to terms with their behavior within the next 10-20 years, when the current generation comes of age, and the youth behind them exists. And both I don't see looking very favorably at being screwed on Healthcare, Education, Immigration, etc. Reform. I just don't. The current generation that grew up through the 1990s and 2000s seems to lean far more left than the Republicans of right now would be comfortable with.

We're jeering because Karl Rove is a know-it all kingmaker in the Republicans who counted his eggs before they hatched. And that he's temper tantruming that his Super PA Cs (enabled by a Supreme Court he helped create) failed badly.

It's called Schadenfreude.

Personally I don't think they would have (at least not on the air) but if they did I would be very disappointed in them.

And if someone did somewhere, then Republicans and other people might have mocked that person and the demographic, but it probably won't be us because we'll be busy being concerned about Romney presidency.

I agree with you. Most Democrats are very much like the President, as in, they carry themselves with a composure and panache that, as the Aiken debacle showed, too many Republicans lack.

But then, Karl Rove is not any "leader" of the Republican party. And Mitt Romney, and Republican NJ governor Christie, two of the bigger names in Republican politics, basically can sum up their statements with "Well done President Obama."

Maxima: If all the news networks had declared a Romney victory, including MSNBC, I guarantee you democrats would not have thrown the kind of absolute hissyfit that Rove and co did on Fox News

My point is, why is Karl Rove the entire Republican party? Is that not the kind of broadbrushing that liberals resent in the right-wingers?

But then, Karl Rove is not any "leader" of the Republican party.
He's typically considered to be one of the two major kingmakers in the Republican party, along with the Koch Brothers. They aren't official leaders, but they get to decide who is likely to be. You want to get anywhere big time as a politician in the party? You need to basically have Rove and the Koch Brothers' blessing.

I still feel the media wouldn't have flipped out on air. There might have been a few things kicked or some fists smashed on stuff from the more volatile pundits but probably not on the air.

@Potatoes Rock, while that might be true, why uphold him as the example? Why not judge us by the fact that the very man we wanted to unseat Obama and halt his socialism stood up and said "He has my prayers, and my congratulations"?

Again, isn't that the kind of thing you'd demand of the right?
