Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

'Mitt Romney willing to work in Obama administration'
Question: Why does everyone keep calling the man 'Governor Romney' when he hasn't been a governor for the past five years?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016
Meh, I think it sounds awkward and needlessly formal. Same with calling a U.S. Senator 'Senator this-and-that' all the time, or the annoying tendency of the more "serious" Anglophone newspapers to put 'Mr.' or 'Ms.' in front of everyone's last name in editorials and such ('Mr. Obama has done blah and blah, while Mr. Romney has...'). Just the last name would work much better!

Mache dich, mein Herze, rein...Screengrabs of the site the Romney campaign designed for if he'd won.
Apparently the site went up accidentally briefly or something.

Anyone interested in a point-by-point takedown of this bullshit or would that be dignifying an article that doesn't deserve it?

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.I sometimes don't know myself. As time has gone on, my socio-religious-political views have shifted so much, I wonder if I'm a constituency of just one nowadays.
I mean, I loathe abortions, but how do you say no to someone who says they want better sex education and realistic access to healthcare and birth control? I don't like the concept of the welfare state or the Occupy movement's rhetoric that we should 'just forgive student loans', but how do you say no to someone saying "But if you bail out a bank that squandered their profits, why not a person who simply fell on hard times?'
I don't want some misplaced sense of politeness to keep us from defending ourselves, but even I think we've overstayed our welcome in the Middle East by about...a decade. I think saying "I think homosexuality is a sin" isn't 'hate speech'. But I think breaking into a woman's house because she's a lesbian and carving "dyke" on her body as if this is some feudal estate IS most certainly a hate crime and should carry a minimum 10-year-sentence without parole.
I dunno. Maybe, if there's a TV Tropes party platform, then I'll have a place to belong.
It was an honorYou are a sensible moderate. *pats on shoulder* You poor bastard.

Few political demographics get it worse. Us Chomskyan progressives more so. Which reminds me.

Oh nonononono. You're the moderate, you get to be Prez. I'm the Chomsky-quoting Occupy-supporting hardcore progressive, I'm VP. It's the perfect life insurance policy. They won't dare assassinate you. Hell, just you threatening to quit will scare the nutters into submission.
Well, if me and Taoist take the White House, and meanwhile Euo, you win Prime Minister on your side of the pond....
Sensible politicians who are loyal only to the greater good, kicking the ass of Big Business and fundamentalists from one time zone to the other.
Awesome much?

It was an honor@Radical Taoist: That link
is hilarious. While it doesn't dignify a response, I suppose I feel like amusing myself so I'll take a shot at it.
#1) Huge expansion of TSA and the surveillance state
Okay, I'm already at a loss here. Apparently TSA is a haven for people who like to sexually molest innocent travelers? This is just fearmongering with no basis in fact.
#2) Expansion of secret arrests of American citizens
Yes, the secret arrests that don't actually happen. I didn't research these guys before, but are they liberal or conservative? They sound crazy.
#3) Acceleration of national debt blowout and endless fiat currency creation
And the problem with this is? Never mind, these are probably gold standard folks who think Paul Krugman is the Antichrist. Anyway, Obama has pledged to lower the deficit, which I think is a mistake until the economy recovers more, but what can you do?
#4) Rapid expansion of GMOs and USDA collusion
Ah yes, the conspiracy to make us all eat genetically modified Frankenfoods. Forgive me for siding with Monsanto and the Prez on this one; while I support transparency in labeling in a general sense, I don't believe in scaring people with phantom problems when there are far more crucial ones that need to be addressed.
#5) Increasingly dictatorial government health care
*Snerk* *Chuckle* *Snort*. Okay, okay, pull the other one, guys. You're making me laugh here.
#6) Immediate surge in sales of guns and ammo
The old "Obama hates the Second Amendment" line, despite having done nothing of the sort and said nothing of the sort. Nevertheless, I do expect that the Ted Nugent-worshiping crowd will continue to stock their armories, as they do when butterflies fart and rain falls.
#7) Accelerated erosion of the Bill of Rights and civil liberties
This presumes that an erosion has been occurring. Objection, your Honor! Assumes facts not in evidence!
#8) Continued destruction and looting of the U.S. economy
Well, at least they get that Romney would be just as bad. But what I can't figure out is who is doing the "looting". Apparently they simultaneously believe that the "global banker elite" will continue draining our money and that the welfare state will turn us all into mindless zombies. That both cannot be true at the same time is apparently lost on them.
#9) A “giant sucking sound” of employers leaving America
The "Obamacare will destroy jobs by driving employers away" line. Again, needs a solid helping of evidence.
#10) Stepped-up attacks on veterans and preppers
"Veterans will continue to be vilified by the Obama administration?" The administration that tried to pass a bill allocating $1 billion for job placement for vets? The stupidity erodes my very soul. And like I said earlier about the gun control myth, so-called "preppers" will stockpile guns, food, and ammo when ducks fly south or bears shit. They don't need any justifications.
I think my brain rotted a bit just from reading that article.
