Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Mind you I'd feel a lot more gracious to the Pro-Life crowd if they were also pro extending Natal care, Maternity Care, Universal Healthcare, and allowed a much easier adoption process. (Still don't agree on children concieved on rape.)
Also I believe the GOP has no legitimacy to ban Same-Sex Marriage, as I don't consider the bible a valid basis for government decision, despite being a Christian.

@dp: Hate speech laws just seemed like an idea you would support, so I was a bit surprised. I suppose I mischaracterized you, though.
@Fighteer: The "it's okay to be personally opposed to gay marriage but not ok to force your beliefs on others through legislation" one.

@Starship: Well, most, if not all, of what Potatoes Rock said is stuff the Democratic party and their candidates are saying. Heck, Obama's foreign policy is more conservative that the foreign policy described by PR, since Team America: World Police is what he did in Libya, and the Republican foreign policy is even more conservative than that.
@Hilarity: Hate speech laws infringe on social liberties, which, as a liberal extremist, I'm, in general, against.

The right of a human being to exist is beyond personal choice or negotiation.
Again, if you were running, I'd vote for you.

It was an honorExcept that it's not a human being until it's born. This is the distinction we can't agree on, Starship, and I'll kindly ask you (and others, including myself) not to continue to debate the topic.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Personally, if I could be convinced that a fetus is a person, I would probably change my stance on abortion, but, as things are, I'm against it, since I see the fetus as not being a person, but, rather, a part of the mother, so I do see it as the mother's choice.
@Starship: Again, generally an ideal that Democrats are in support of. Remind me why you vote Republican over Democrat, again, when you are clearly disgusted with the Republicans?

I do agree with you there. A priority to save pre-birth babies should be coupled with proper healthcare and general respect for life after birth, and proper support for adequate living.
But I likewise challenge the pro-choice side to not abuse right to abortion whenever they feel like it, and to use it as a womanist/misandrist political weapon against "men". They need to make responsible choice and not get "drunk" on their liberty.
Edit: Blah mistake.

@L Mage: Many anti-abortion folks are genuinely compassionate people. I cannot support blanket statements about their motivations. Unfortunately, the topic easily lends itself to hateful rhetoric and riles people up to the point where they are willing to wave around pictures of aborted fetuses and assassinate doctors. The movement can't legitimize itself to many people until it stops acting like domestic terrorists.
And I suppose we should off-topic this if it continues. It's remained civil but let's go talk about something else please.
Not actually very funny.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So are you telling us to abort this line of discussion?
Fair enough. I'll shut up now.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ Cyran@Starship:
1. I.E. thinking humans, which a zygote is not (and isn't even comparable to the vast majority of animals, let alone the other most intelligent animal species'). But I will stop this, since a-word derail blah blah blah.
2. Potatoes said it best.
3. Potatoes, again, said it best.
4. Your (unintended) implication: fuck these Mexicans. You could also, again, see Potatoes solution, which I think you would actually like if you weren't manipulated.
5. Don't care, still bullshit. I.E., see what I said in my last post.
6. Agreed, actually, but having too much of a pro-military attitude will lead us to become Israel 2.0 (see that implication thing, I really like to fuck people over with it), and I'd rather not have that lead us to attacking brown people when we think they might kill us all.

So, in the wake of Obama's re-election, one of my friends turned out to be anti-Obama (and Romney for that matter), bringing up this
list of "10 dire consequences of Obama's re-election". My question is, is the list a valid list of complaints, or some anti-dem bashing.
Also, is Gary Johnson a known (and sane) politician? The same friend seems to think Gary would be a much better choice for president.
The reason I'm skeptic is that this person was convinced Ron Paul was the savior that America needed, and from what I heard this opinion is not shared at all on the other side of the borders.
@Deathpiegon
I'm of the opinion that power has become to radically dispersed in the House due to the ridiculous committee system, and needs to be re-centerlized and stream lined in order to keep pace with our society.
I agree the President shouldn't overstep and again to much power, but at the same time he needs a stronger role in legislation OR a strong leader in the congress itself has to emerge that will get everyone working together. Neither thing will happen with Republican controlled house.
I wouldn't be worried about anything on that list, it reads like a Libertarian propaganda, not a legitimate article.

I still say the GOP needs to comprise and allow abortions in the cases of Rape, Incest, The fetus having some physical or mental birth defect, and if the mother is under 18 or over 50.
We are at the point were the pro-life advocates can either get there half loaf of bread or keep demanding there full loaf and get nothing. Sadly they seem to be taking the later course of action.
I'm sympathetic to the Pro-lifers because I'm not particularly fond of abortions. But the mainstream Pro Life advocates PR is just awful. Things like Todd Aiken and Abortion Clinic bombings help nothing in this regard.
Also stop using Religion to justify your opposition to abortion. Use 'morality' or 'ethics' instead. That plays better with the irreligious and secular voters.
EDIT: DAMMIT! I miss all of the good abortion derails.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016

@Fish 1: We already have hate speech laws and the First Amendment remains intact. So that's completely incorrect.
@Hilarity: Which thing I said?
@Starship: What Potatoes said is pretty much the current Democratic position on these topics. Nobody but Republican strawmen has said anything about punishing the rich for their success or enabling generations of "welfare queens".
