The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I'd love it if Julian Castro ran; I think he's one of the few Dems who could be the first Latino president. Biden would be nice, but he'd probably lose to a good Republican. (see: good) Warren would be good.

So. The question for '16 would be, does Ryan run? Does Santorum run? Are there any actually good GOP candidates left?

@Kostya

Try it and they'll be destroyed. Democratic Super PAC groups will show a picture of 2008 Palin photo with a "read my lips no women politicians" message playing over it.

The Green Party tends to agree with the Libertarian Party on social and foreign policy issues, but they disagree completely on economic issues.

Are there any parties on the flip side of Libertarians?

Actually I hear Puerto Rico is like that.

[up]What do you mean by that?

[up][up][up]You are implying they're rational.

[up][up][up][up]Well the Latino vote would be guaranteed.

That actually brings up something interesting. Blacks are generally Democratic but they had record turnouts because of Obama which certainly played a part in his victory. What do you think is going to happen to that if we get a white or Latino on the ticket?

I mean supporting regulations and restrictions on both economics and social issues.

And what's important is whether the voters will be rational, not the party. That's the discussion we've had in past pages - whether GOP will survive at this rate.

Republicans are probably going to prop up whatever nutcase the GOP runs. Independents are another matter. Some of them might not care if they feel the other candidate isn't trustworthy or if the recovery is botched.

Democrats gain supermajority in Calif. Senate

Marco Rubio is probably the best bet for the GOP in 2016. I'd certainly support him to a much greater degree than I did Romney. I wished he'd have run this time around, but I think he knew a bad election year when he saw it. With luck, the 2016 primary race won't be quite as ridiculous.

I'd personally like to Jeb Bush run, but unfortunately his relatives have somewhat sullied the family name.

[up] Did the GOP ever get a supermajority in Georgia?

(besides some weird lying about Native American descent thing)
She is Native American by blood (but holds no tribe affiliation proper). It's just she's relatively diluted that she's astoundingly white looking.

Nope.

Georgia Republicans miss “supermajorities” by razor-thin margin

Marco Rubio's challenge wouldn't be beating the Democrats. It would be beating the Republican Party.

A Marco vs. Julian campaign would be interesting, if only to see the look of horror on old racist faces as two candidates try to out-Latino each other. The first speech in Spanish would drive 'em nuts.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

I also would like Marco Rubio, if he's as good as people say he is, to be our generation's Eisenhower. Only I hope that Democrats don't do something stupid and get beat hard like back then.

@Kostya: Sorry for the late reply, but I'm kind of busy over here. The Greens ARE NOT a Libertarian party. I think you need to check out their platform: They're not against government intervention at all, particularly where they think it will help ensure a good ecological policy. In fact, they're called the Greens specifically because they're the environmental party. Ensuring that kind of requires government intervention.

The Libertarians are the ones that get the accusations of Randianism, because a lot of them admire or adhere to Objectivist philosophy, and in general want to pursue a path of as little government intervention as possible. To the point that some of them would gladly repeal affirmative action. They're also just as infected with the religious right at this moment as the mainstream Republicans they usually vote for, so that's a huge issue.

Do Latinos have magic powers or something? I don't see why Rubio, or Castro for that matter, would somehow be unbeatable based on that single factor. It'd make for an interesting race, though.

Well, does the Green party support social regulation as much as economic regulation? Then it would actually be a balanced party. Or is it just straight-up social liberty?

[up](true) also applies to social liberty.

Here are their core beliefs:

  • Grassroots democracy
  • Social justice and equal opportunity
  • Ecological wisdom
  • Nonviolence
  • Decentralization
  • Community-based economics
  • Feminism and gender equality
  • Respect for diversity
  • Personal and global responsibility
  • Future focus and sustainability

I would classify some of those as Libertarian positions.

I believe the problem is she used minority status for either her position or for her education. She's legitimately descended from a minority racial group, but she looks so incredibly Caucasian that people say she stole such things from people who were more deserving.

That's last what I remember reading/hearing, tho'.
