The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]I think a limit on how many times it can be used per year would be a good idea.

I am inherently leery of any attempt by the party in power to limit the ability of the minority to stand against them. That said, it's hard to argue that the filibuster (or the threat thereof) has not been abused terribly by Republicans in the Senate.

Krugman psychoanalyzes the GOP, with a side of "I'm not gloating except I am" thrown in. As he says, we have to be cautious that this doesn't come back to bite us.

Former Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert slams Netanyahu's 'US election interference'

"The prime minister has a right to prefer one candidate over another, but it would be better, obviously if he kept it to himself. What took place this time was a breaking of all the rules, when our prime minister intervened in the US elections in the name of an American billionaire," Olmert added, in reference to Jewish-American casino magnate and Yisrael Hayom owner Sheldon Adelson, a major donor to Republican candidate Mitt Romney and Netanyahu.

Julian Castro (the guy who delivered the keynote speech at the DNC) should be the democratic candidate in 2016. Partly because he seems awesome, partly because Biden would be 74 if elected President, and I'd rather not have him die in office (and in general) due to a combination of stress and old age.

Blame Hussein and Castro being painfully generic names for the cultures the mens' ancestory comes from. Le sigh, America.

And then we'll have Birther 2.0's wandering around, thinking Julian was born in Cuba, or even better, he's related to/the son of Fidel Castro and a no good Fucking-Communist-Hippie-Liberal-Dictator of America.

Julian Castro may have had a good speech but he doesn't have political clout. Now it would be interesting if Elizabeth Warren ran in 4 years, for either president or vice president. I loved her speech.

[up][up]And I will laugh as they spiral into irrelevancy. It would be interesting though if we went from one first to another.

Would the racist demographic of the GOP's supporters revolt if Martinez or Rubio was nominated?

[up][up]What? What does Palin have to do with my question?

[up]Who knows. They're probably seen as some of the good ones so they might just grit their teeth and accept them like they did with Mitt Romney.

@Kostya; I find it unlikely that the Libs and Greens would join together. What with the Greens basically having a socialist platform and the Libs, again, running with the Republicans. And having basically a paranoid view of the government and overly angelic view of the free market. The Greens support business regulation, and moreover, support funding clean energy research which Libs think the free market can encourage all on its own.

The only thing they seem to agree on is that pot should be legal.

What? What does Palin have to do with my question?

Hypocrisy, wouldn't it be? Maverick Mc Cain chose Palin to energize the base, remember?

Greens are the real liberal party in the US, they're not libertarian. Though they both agree on social issues, I suppose.

And yeah, Elizabeth Warren seems pretty awesome too (besides some weird lying about Native American descent thing). I'd vote for her.

Usually, from what I've seen, racist/sexist people tend to see people they agree with that happen to be part of the minority they are prejudiced against as "A credit to their race/gender," or "one of the good ones."

They're more against the nebulous idea of that race as a whole, and specific members of that race that they see to embody the stereotypes. Racism can be subtle.

On a few issue sure.

But the Libertarian Party and the Green Party are on opposite sides of the political spectrum when it comes to economics.

I'm pretty sure 2016 will be another long primary search on both sides again, since I doubt Biden would try for being President after being in the Senate for so long,I'm betting he'll retire.

I'm going with people like Tim Kaine or Martin O'Malley

And on the GOP side, probably Rick Perry or Santorum again.

I think this comment right here from Michelle Malkin summarizes how out of touch Fox News reality is with regular reality.

"My counsel to you tonight: Please, do not be bitter," Malkin wrote to fellow conservatives. "Do not fall prey to the Beltway blame game. Do not get mired in small things. Do not become vengeful creatures like our political opponents who voted out of spite instead of love of country."

They seriously do believe that liberals truly are evil monsters.

I'd love to see Elizabeth Warren make a try for it but there will be concerns that she's too inexperienced and/or hasn't paid her dues. Obama somehow managed a pass on that, but I have a feeling that the GOP won't let her get away with the same deal. And yes, the hypocrisy of them accusing Warren of being a rube when they ran Palin in 2008 will be utterly lost on them.
