The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Didn't Ted Nugent say "If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year" a while back?

Also Trump was calling for a revolution a couple hours ago, before he realized that Obama had won the popular vote.

New York State Senate goes Dem, Oregon State Senate goes Dem. New Hampshire State House goes Dem; NH State Senate still has small Repub margin.

Unfortunately, though, Wisconsin State Senate goes Repub by them merely picking up retiring incumbent Jim Holperin's seat. WE FOUGHT SO HARD FOR THAT

Probably because the Democrats generally don't have the same "America first and fuck everyone else" attitude towards foreign policy that the Republicans exemplify.

Seriously tho, did Romney have any chance?

8.9% according to 538. Though he did reach as high as 30-40% after the Denver debate.

Governorships are about the only thing you can't gerrymander, at least if all states use direct popular vote election of them (I'm not absolutely sure of this). Though I think you were meaning more about how governors can do a lot of gerrymandering for other elected offices?
This. Lots of Republican governors are what get us bullshit like the Tea Party wave in 2010.

Looks like the Dems won both the presidency and the Senate, even likely gaining seats. However, the Repubs in the House have, at least decently well, baked in their gains thanks to gerrymandering.

There were no notable dummymanders, though the Dems came close to a dummymander in Illinois.

No, Arkansas is not a dummymander. It is a failmander.

(FYI, Dems controlled the redistricting trifecta in Arkansas...and proceeded to draw a 0-4 map.)

So, victory for Obama, Senate for the Democrats and House for the Republicans, eh?

Well, can't win 'em all, I guess. I consider this a positive result.

would removing the electoral college actually do anything, with all the gerrymandering we do?
It would means that the coasts elect the president — which would effectively mean "Democrats win".

The main reason for the electoral college at this point in time is to prevent a tyranny of the majority. If the president was elected by straight popular vote, then candidates would only ever bother to campaign in high population density areas (ie, cities). Flyover country would be completely ignored. Hell, two of the major states people were keeping an eye on this election were Wisconsin and Virginia. No disrespect to those states, but they're relatively small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, except for the electoral college.

And that's exactly why we have it. It's meant to be a balance between a straight popular vote and a straight state-by-state vote — which it does quite well. The number of electoral college votes that each state gets is the same as the number of total congressmen they have — two in the Senate, plus a number in the House of Representatives determined by population. That way, small states have a disproportional influence compared to their population, but population isn't completely ignored.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

The original intent of the electoral college was to restrain the slave states, which were allowed to treat their slaves as four-fifths of a person for electoral reasons, IIRC.
