The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Anyone looking for a laugh should go and read Free Republic. I love the smell of Conrage in the morning...smells like...victory.

A surprisingly profound comment from them, however. In 2016, the GOP will enter having won the popular vote once in 28 years. I think someone needs a new election strategy...no more Southern racists left, so who is going to be the GOP's new target demographic? Or will they collapse (fingers crossed).

That's not so much wild mass guessing as a really good explanation.

All right, this library is closing. It was a fun night watching the election results and talking here.

Good night.

Obama is apparently in the building and should be speaking soon. any news on bachmann?

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

Boehner sent out a statement calling for bipartisanship in later topics.

Looks like Cantor's losing his grip on the House, if Boehner's decided to finally ignore Cantor's far-right advice.

The future of the Republican Party is Latinos. And it's painful for liberals to admit, but it's probably going to happen fairly soon.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Looks like the Repubs are going to try to keep the House gerrymander in their favor for a while.

On the other hand, they can't gerrymander state lines, and the Dems seem poised to gain there.

@Serocco: Yeah, obviously. Because the Republicans actively pushed them away.

But honestly, a good politician could have won the Latino vote this election. All it would take is a few changes on immigration policy and some speeches in Spanish.

So how are things gonna be this time around? I mean, last time Obama was president didn't Republicans have majority in congress(or was it senate? I don't remember American political terms well) or something?

Republicans had the House. Democrats had the Senate.

This time, Republicans kept the House and Democrats kept the Senate.

Okay, fun poll time;

Did anybody do a Write-In, and if so, did they do it for a random choice(not somebody realistic, but not a fictional person). I put Dan Green into the last slot. Anybody else do a funny write-in?

I know someone who says they wrote in Bill Clinton. Personally I think it's important to vote Obama, even in a state where it doesn't matter.

Ultrayellow: Latinos are not one solid block of voters. . Cubans are not Mexicans are not Puerto Ricans are not Salvadoreans and so on and so forth. Mexicans for one are noted to vote Democrat, particularly here in Texas where all the districts that bored Mexico apparently are very blue. Cubans probably vote Republican due to issues with communist Cuba, and that could change down the line. Particularly if we ever (and we're going to have to, eventually) drop the embargo on Cuba.
