The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Man, poor Mitt looks like he's been crying or is about to.

@Lost Anarchist:

I'll have to formally ask you to stop shouting. I know we're all excited about Obama's victory, but you're not adding anything constructive with those kinds of comments, and it's getting irritating.

Romney decided to concede just after Obama gains a lead in the popular vote.

I can't believe Romney just said he thinks Obama can lead the country in the right direction. Isn't that the exact opposite of everything he's been saying for the past year?

That's right, boys. Mondo cool.

Well, this has been surprisingly polite and non partisan.

Of course he has to be polite and non-partisan, otherwise people would go crazy.

I'm pretty sure this is shorter than Mc Cain's speech.

I am watching the BBC news channel on the Freeview service on my digital telly.

Romney has just said "I believe in America. I believe in the people of America." Not enough people in America believed in him.

When does Barry come on to make his "hell, yeah I won!" speech?

And so marks the final television appearance ever by Mitt Romney.

No, for real. Ann said Romney will end his political career if he loses.

It's official: Paul Ryan has lost the VP position and won the House election. He remains a Wisconsin representative, as expected.

[up]Well, Nixon also did that before he was elected president.

It must be hard knowing that you were almost the most powerful man in the world.

This is probably what Mc Cain, Kerry, Gore (especially Gore), Dole, Dukakis, Mc Govern, and all the rest felt.

BTW: I thought this was Romney's best speech.

Well Romney's has lots of experience with suddenly changing his tune.

And so marks the final television appearance ever by Mitt Romney.

I doubt it. At the very least, he'll probably be interviewed or on a talk show or something at some point.

CNN's ranting about how this is really painful to lose. Makes you wonder how Gore feels.

Of course my stream craps out half-way through his speech. Thank The Nine I still have telly.

I recall Mc Cain's speech being better but I might have just been more emotional about it.

Honestly, Romney's speech was pretty good. He encouraged his party to build bridges to the Democrats and to stop being obstructionist. Sounds like he knows why he lost.

Romney's last appearance on television as a politician is to endorse Obama after spending the better part of a year bashing him.

Very fitting end for Flip Romney.

The debates really highlighted that there wasn't much difference in personal policies between the two, so I'm not surprised Romney can say that. He might even mean it.

We weren't really having a referendum on the man so much as the party. It was, by any reasonable standard, their battle to lose rather than their opponents' battle to win. They lost it. Whether they understand that and make adjustments remains to be seen.

Some forecasters are suggesting a civil war within the GOP. I'm... unsure. The next few days will tell.
