The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I see no moral inconsistency in legalising weed, then taxing the hell out of it like tobacco.

Morally, no. The problem is pragmatic: if you tax or regulate it very much at all it gets undercut by the black market and nothing useful actually gets done. The same thing happened in Canada with cigarettes, and those were already legal and had a fraction of the kind of tax marijuana would get.

Now, on a bit of a side note, remember all those conservatives complaining about how Nate Silver's numbers were obviously biased? Well, it turned out he correctly predicted the outcome of every state in the electoral college again (assuming Ohio and Florida hold up). That's in terms of black-and-white, one candidate or the other, not closeness to actual results.

He did a little worse in the Senate races, though–it would appear that he picked North Dakota and Nevada incorrectly–in favor of the Republicans. That's right, for all the complaining by the right about how biased Silver's predictions were, he was actually a little more to the right than the actual election.

CNN projects Obama will win Virginia, making Nate Silver the winner of this year's presidential election.

Do you think Romney will concede the election tonight or tomorrow? I need to know if I should be going to sleep soon.

@Trivialis: And, booze isn't taxed, at all? Nor is it tested for at the side of the road and illegal to drive over the limit? As you can test for cannabis use... your point is?

Yes, there are psychoactive elements, but, I'd rate alcohol to be less healthy, overall, than cannabis for the sheer damage it does by its availability and social acceptance.

Reagan was reelected during a recovery, if Wikipedia is correct.

I'd say it applies to Obama too, but on a narrower margin.

Well, my history is a little fuzzy but I don't think Roosevelt had an opponent that insulted half the country and compared a superstorm to a football game during a critical point in the election.

Empty podium at Romney's campaign headquarters. No sign of him making his concession speech. Live on the BBC news channel.

Of course booze is taxed. But I'm talking about further regulations besides that because it's more than about just revenues. Also, alcohol historically has a better development of culture/proper usage and more of a backlash against its prohibition. These are the factors that make me skeptical overall towards marijuana.

@ Trivialis: Mental health issues or lung cancer? Your call. Though to be fair I don't like anything smoked: Tar is a major carcinogen afterall.

Lung cancer is bad, of course, and I don't like smoking and drinking personally. But it tends to not threaten other people immediately like drinking and driving does.
