The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@drunkgirlfriend Where are you getting your results? The site I'm looking at has resolution no 8223 pretty soundly rejected.

The Democrats are behind the GOP by 50 in the house seats. I'm guessing they won't close that gap at all.sad

Californian fears towards the measure were justified. Their reason was that the law was badly written, ignored public safety and just didn't include concrete regulations.

To be fair, I find his later tweets to be quite strangely extreme compared with this:

Whoever wins today, remember that tomorrow we still have a country struggling. Our work is not done until America is strong again.

Not having actually seen the guy on TV is he actually like that?

Trump:

Lets fight like hell and stop this great and disgusting injustice! The world is laughing at us.

Me:

No, we're laughing at you specifically.

Apparently I'm not anywhere near the only one who replied like that.

You can tax the crackheads using Marijuana and make money off that.

But no, the drug companies that are making drug pills don't want that competition.

Simply taxing a drug and letting it loose isn't necessarily a good law. Especially with a hallucinogen.

Where do you guys get the popular vote from? NYT is still putting Romney's popular vote ahead by about 15k.

Edit: Wait, nvm. NYT just updated. tongue

Okay USA, good on you for sticking with the president that knows rape is rape, believes health care should be available for everybody and that same sex couples must have the same rights as heterosexual couples.

And I know someone was asking for stream links, here's the link for CNN's streams, on the Romney headquarters they are, quite appropiately, very sour and watching Fox News, and on the Obama headquarters they're partying cool

[up][up]I see no moral inconsistency in legalising weed, then taxing the hell out of it like tobacco. smile

[up]I kind of felt for Fox a bit. However, I doubt they're going to do any soul searching on their own account over this. tongue Heaven forfend they point fingers at their own conduct.

Going by the voting totals for the three groups it looks like around 33% of Americans voted. That's honestly less than I would have liked.

[up]x4 I don't know the mental effects on tobacco but I'm pretty sure it's not as severe as marijuana. People drive and smoke.

[up][up]They did try to buy more votes. But the US dollar is so bad it cant even buy those now. :P

Also, RE: Marijuana, its been proven that while it messes up your brain, it's arguably safer than Alcohol as high people have less chance of harming others while drunks typically harm or kill many more people.

Mental effects. If you drink and drive you're actually too impaired to drive. I don't think tobacco has that.

This is becoming a derail and we can talk elsewhere if you're interested. I'm just stating my position on this, though.
