The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The fact that the incumbent is possibly getting a landslide with the economy in the shape it is (its not entirely his fault but that generally doesn't matter) should have the Republicans rethinking their entire gameplan. This was their race to lose and they lost it. Of course they might just keep going further to the right... denial is a thing after all.

Man, this is... man. [lol]

  • Obama reelected.
  • Gay marriage passed in for all states that had it on its ballot.
  • Marijuana legalized in at least one state.
  • Rove, Trump, and Fox in total meltdown mode.

This is... [lol]

Good or bad (hey, who am I to judge?), this is a significant moment in American history, eh?

[up][up][up][up] Only three are voting Marriage in, Minnesota is just voting whether or not to ban it constitutionally (so it can't be court-enacted or legalized easily)

@Rationalinsanity

Once again, a <100 electoral vote difference is not a landslide. The electoral votes are inflated. That happens quite a bit in close elections, too.

Ohio seems to be crossing the line back to Romney a bit. Won't matter now but it would be rather amazing if it does go red. Probably a counting anomaly, though.

[up][up][up]Dear God I hope we keep Ohio. We don't need it but I don't want the Republicans to savor even a tiny victory. They need to lose big tonight.

Marijuana is still federally prohibited though. And I'm personally not very much in favor of marijuana.

I don't care for any kind of mind affecting substance, but the penalties for use/possession are egregious, and overwhelmingly enforced on people of color. Plus, marijuana has fewer side-effects than booze or tobacco. I say it's better than either, and making it legal means making it taxable and enforcing standards on it. Good for all involved I think.
