The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I wonder what the flag would look like. The easiest way to divide up 51 is to make three columns/rows of 17 stars but I feel like that would look weird.

Man, when was the last time we changed our flags? 1959?

This is going to topple millions of flags if Congress approves.

Dem senate gains are now down to only 3 gains.

Grizzly: My point was that I answered your question. You asked if I was fine with Akin running again in 2014. I answered that based on the idea of Akin running again, not winning.

That completely misses the point of what I was asking. Grayson is worse than Akin, and you seem to be ok with him not only running but winning his race.

Grizzly: Grayson was trying to defeat his political rival. Akin was basically insulting rape victims. I don't see why you're so hung up over Grayson in particular. He's was fine apart from that one moment, whereas I don't see a single good trait from Akin.

In particular, Akin will not talk about campaign finance reform. Grayson will, which is why I'm glad that he's back in office. At least the issues will get addressed.

Florida is now a 0.6% lead for Obama with 89% reporting, Ohio is a 3.1% lead with 49% reporting.

@Terl; calm down. Obama has a decent edge and I bet a few Republican leaning areas are starting to report. A 6% gap is quite substantial; Kerry couldn't overcome it 8 years ago. And I'm sure more urban areas that favor Obama will come up soon.

As a matter of being a woman, I tend to look down far worse on someone who insults rape victims, or otherwise questions my worth as a woman. It's a bias I know, but I feel it's legitimate. Especially since men like that are going to put themselves between me and my health decisions. Far more than any Democrat will.

But Grayson must be running up against a no-name or really hated guy if he's winning after being called out as a liar like this. *shrug*

@terlwyth: I was unaware that 90k votes up was a loss for Obama.
