The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Obama is ahead by .4% in Florida and 6% in Ohio. Looking good so far even though he's likely to lose Virginia.

[up]? We knew that a while ago.

I seem to remember that Bush had a similar lead to Obama in Ohio back in 04. Kerry could never close the gap. Its not over yet but Romney's chances are grim if he doesn't start making it up soon.

There are two Floridas?smile

Grizz, what's so bad about Grayson? Also is the same guy Serroco's talking about?

Seriously so many names are flying around now I can no longer keep track of what's going on.

It's over. Obama has Florida. Even though his lead is razor-thin right now, that's only because all the central red counties reported first. The results still coming in are mostly from Miami-Dade and other blue areas.

Looks like we get another 4 years of Obama vs the House.

That second Florida should have said Ohio. I fixed it. Apparently Obama leads in Hillsboro County, Florida which is a very strong swing county.

I thought Wisconsin was leaning Romney?

It's been red at times but apparently there are particular cities and towns that Romney had to win to get the state and he didn't win those.

Yep.

Fortunately, Obama will be able to get his choice of judicial nominees this term, so at least social civil liberties should be well-protected. (Hopefully, one of the conservative justices will step down and we can look at getting rid of Citizens United.)

Obama now has a 0.5% lead in Florida (87% reporting), currently it's still 4 Dem senate gains and Ohio is showing a 5% Obama lead with 30% reporting. Why is Ohio so slow to count? Do they use paper votes over machine voting? Or are they just being extra careful, so as to avoid people doing a nut when it don’t go their way?

Nice to see Grayson's winning.

I don't get why the Senate is more democratic then the House. It seems like more states are Red but the Blue states are more typically populous. I would think it'd be the other way around :/

So basically,Florida and Virginia have switched places at best,Romney takes them both at worst.

Obama has Ohio and Colorado, but Romney somehow stole Wisconsin,....gulp

@Ace of Spades: We talked about Grayson earlier. He's made a number of offensive statements, but the main reason I dislike him so strongly is because of his "Taliban Dan" ad campaign, in which he took video of his opponent telling men not to be domineering over their wives, cut the "don't" out of the sentence, and ran it in ads designed to evoke the idea of a some rape cult leader who hates women.

Then, when basically everyone called him out on it, he continued to adamantly insist on national TV that his ad was an accurate portrayal of his opponent, not even making any of the usual politician damage control statements.
