The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Even without Ohio or any other lean Huff Post have Obama at 158, he only needs 192 plus the west coast (and Hawaii) for a win. So that's 158+29 for Florida =187 so then it's just New Mexico (5) and you have 192 which combined with the 78 from east coast plus Hawaii (4+55+7+12) makes 270.

[down][down] Fixed. :)

Akin is finished when it comes to Republican politics. That should have been an easy race... I bet the RNC wants his skin.

Although if Obama takes Colorado, Nevada, and Iowa, and Romney get Ohio, then Obama wins with 272 electoral votes and Florida still doesn't matter.

Depends on New Hampshire. I'm waiting until an agency calls it before I bother bringing that into the mix...

That said, I don't think Obama will take all three of those states... Just two of them.

@Silas: A lot of the early calls are done by independent polling, not counting the actual votes.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

Huff Post are giving Obama a 0.3% lead in Florida with 85% reporting. Ohio is a 5% lead with 30% reporting.
