The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So I've got a question from looking at the Huff Post map. Why the hell does Hawaii close its polls at 11 EST? I mean, isn't that super early for them due to time zones?

Probably to be in lock step with Alaska (Alaska is one hour ahead of Hawaii).

Hawaii generally doesn't matter too much, but their polls close at the same time as Cali.

Obama's gaining ground in VA, and FL is still neck-and-neck.

[up] X7 Weird. I figured the time zones would be a much bigger stretch due to the distance. Hey I'm allowed to not know you guys time zones I'm not American. tongue

[up]X5 Huff post say Alaska close last at 12, H Awii closes same as Cal and the rest of the west coast.

[down]Polls close at 10pm (EST) so they are still open.

Polls in Iowa don't close until 9pm local... 10pm est.

Edit: I meant 9 local, not 8... But it's 10pm EST that they don't close.
