The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In this election, voting for Obama isn't about change, it's about triage.

If the Congressional elections shake out the way it looks, then even with an Obama victory Republicans can hope for continued (or increased) gridlock, and a significantly trammelled White House. That won't help out much with SCOTUS picks, and Obama's already proved willing to use executive orders for all they're legally worth (nay, beyond) ... still, it's not nothing.

Mitt has a 0.1% lead in Florida now (62% reporting). Damit I'm happy Florida isn't needed for Obama.

Obama and Romney are flip flopping FL back and forth with less than 1000 deciding votes.

How accurate is 538? While FL, OH, and PA are tossups, 538 says that OH and PA are heavily on Obama's side while FL is just barely leaning democratic.

Wait, why did Fox call PA already?

Because the 3 key counties that Romney needed to take from Obama have him losing 70-30 with 15% counted... It may completely turn around, but Fox's "experts" say there's only a 5% chance of that happening.

Fox may be biased as hell, but they're not going to call something for Obama unless it definitely is...
