The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Will someone remind me when it's about time to tune in to Comedy Central's stuff? (That's 11 PM EST.)

I go have a coffee for an hour and miss 200+ posts...

CNN's info is pretty straight forward to use for anyone trying to graph this shit. By 12 EST we should have a pretty good indication of who won.

Obama's currently leading in Ohio which is a Very Good Sign. Daily show coverage starts at 11, right? Till then I think I'll stick with minecraft and periodically check here.

I was mistaken, looks like Texas is closing at 8pm CST (9pm EST or 2am GMT whichever you prefer).

@randomtropeloser

I do, to some extent. I think many here believe that the first four years laid the foundation for Obama administration: setting up a healthcare reform that is partially not in effect, ending war in Iraq/planning to withdraw from Afghanistan, and generally propping things back up. The second term will be the president's real opportunity to change things.

Maybe that's because all of Bush's disaster (The debt, Iraq, Afghanistan, the recession) transferred over to Obama? (In fairness the recession was not all Bush's fault.)

Romney said he'd eliminate Obamacare. So that would be different.

Well I think Obama would have changed more things if the Republicans let him. My big fear is that we'll go from more of the same (a recovering economy and job market along with slowly improving social issues) to the economic tailspin and 1950s era social scene that Mitt could bring about. It's basically a choice between slow and steady improvement and regression to me.

As a slight change of topic, do you guys really expect much of anything significant to happen regardless of who wins? We didn't really live that different under Obama for four years than we did under Bush for eight, despite their very different political viewpoints.

If Obama wins, and the Democrats don't pick up gains in the House... No. Nothing significantly different... If Romney wins, and the Democrats hold to Harry Reid's promise of acting like Republicans? No. Nothing significantly different.

If the house picks up some Democrats with Obama or Romney wins w/o Ried & co sticking to their guns... Then things will change. Better or worse, depending on your position...

A bunch of Supreme court justices might retire in the next four years and the president gets to nominate their replacements. That's why Obama needs to win.

Two minutes till the next batch of states come in. Get ready...

[up]What evidence is there that he would do that? Presidents generally don't nominate people that aren't in their party.

[up][up]Two would give us a Democratic majority in the Supreme Court with 6-3.

That's a significant advantage if they vote the party line.

[up]No one is sure but it seems likely since two are in their 70s.

The second term the house knows it's stuck with the president for four years so they're a bit more bendy. They might actually get something done now that they're not trying to prevent a second term.

Is VA for Obama or is it leaning towards Romney?

Also 9 PM on east coast polls have closed.

Presidents have plenty of cross-party appointments, even supreme court justices (see Edward White). But it's not happening in the court with the current polarization of politics.

They won't be trying to stop Obama, but they will be trying to make themselves look good, and the Democrats look bad for '14 and '16.

BBC says they're hearing triumphant noises from Obama campaign in Ohio & Virginia. Apparently some recent results have been positive for Barry-O.
