The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

NBC has not called anything beyond the norm.

On the calling states ahead of time: American politics has recently been remarkably inelastic, and precedent plays into everyone's predictions up to and including Nate Silver's. If a swing state was called like that, then you'd be in for a problem. CNN just called Arkansas and Tennessee for Romney.

My mistake. I thought because it was checkmarked and everything that they were done counting.

It's alright, I suppose... I don't recall if you're a first time voter, and wouldn't be used to this or whatnot... I just snapped.

General rule of thumb: It won't be until about Midnight(local time of the state) that every vote has been counted in that state. The state can still be called(enough votes counted where everyone can reasonably say that "there's no reason to suggest the trend will stop, and this person won"), and will be.

Basically, the visible percentage of the win is meaningless until around midnight...

@terlwyth: Nobody expected Obama to win in North Carolina, and Virginia's only a quarter way through. Don't be a pessimist until midnight.

But Romney currently has Florida.

That's according to NY Times. Politico and CNN both show Obama ahead, and they're reporting more votes counted.

What if different news sources end up reporting different winners? Do we get two presidents?

Huff Post have Pa leaning blue again but keep in mind it's <1% reporting so I would say hold out on anything serious till %15+ reporting at least.

[up] Odds are if it becomes close then the news organisation will quickly become less gun ho with their predictions.

What if different news sources end up reporting different winners?

Doesn't usually happen. But those that do are mocked when they turn out to be wrong.

It's why states aren't usually called until an outlet is all but certain that they're going to be right...

The newsies are using projections. The actual vote count is what will determine the outcome.

What if different news sources end up reporting different winners? Do we get two presidents?

Is this a serious question? Because obviously whether a news source reports someone as winner has nothing to do with who actually wins. The official count from the various election offices is the official count, and sources that report otherwise are just wrong.
