The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Virginia is expendable compared to either Ohio or Florida, let alone both.

I'm just going to ask this since I was largely absent from the forums for a while: how did Hurricane Sandy affect elections? I've been hearing that its hitting the east coast could have affected election day procedures.

BBC live feed. If you're seeing pre-recorded videos about how the election works you need to click on "Live: BBC US Election Night 2012"

FiveThirdyEight, Nate Silver's blog.

Politico live coverage of the vote count.

NY Times.

I'll be plugging these about once every page or two until someone tells me not to.

Yeah. Virginia is important mainly because if Romney lost it it would be a huge blow to him since it's a southern state.

[up][up][up]It gave Obama a boost according to most polls.

I'm wondering if Texas's results are going to have any surprises. I know Democrats are on the rise, but I'm wondering by how much and how fast right now. And if there'll be significant enough numbers to actually get people's notice this time around.

And right now I can't remember if this is a Winner takes all state or not, though I'm leaning towards yes.

[up][up]Useful links could be posted in the OP, such as recent major political news. That would apply for the current electoral map links.

[up]Only two states (Maine, Nebraska) allocate some votes by congressional district.

Desperately hoping that Sheriff Arpaio gets the boot from AZ, though that will take a miracle given the overt racism of most of the state's voters. Latinos there are out in force to see that it happens though,.

Regarding the "how do you call a state that has so few votes in" question: if a state, by virtue of pre-election polling and exit polling, is seen as being far enough in one candidate's corner, news stations often call the election very quickly for that candidate. Sometimes as soon as the polls close.

[up]Generally Obama was seen as being a very effective leader and was bipartisan by working heavily with New Jersey's Republican Governor Christ Christie to coordinate relief efforts. Romney also wanted to defund FEMA which is something that has been instrumental in providing relief effort to storm victims.

I see.

Did the east coast recover in time? Some reported concerns that election may have to be outright postponed if the damage was extensive.

I'm not sure. Most of the states affected are Democratic anyway so Obama had a solid lead even if people couldn't vote. I do know most major regions have had power and transportation restored so getting to the polls shouldn't be too much of a problem.
