Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The polls are about to close in most states east of the Mississippi. All together it's 172 E Vs and some particularly strong Obama states, such as Illinois.
Ohio going to Obama makes it that much easier. I'm trying not to panic too much at the early Republican victories, since New England and much of the west coast will go Democrat. California has the most EC votes of all and they're solid Democrat, and a late caller.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.![]()
They seemed rather amused either way, but one of them said "Don't worry, California has like 55 so he'll win" so I guess they're blue-collared. The person predicted that Florida will go to Obama.
I explained to them that it's mainly the east coast that's being completed right now.

I have to admit that I'm shocked at how early you guys are willing to call areas for one candidate or another. I mean I'm seeing states called with <1% reporting. Maybe this is because the last time I was paying big attention to an election (UK 2010) I was doing it from the ballot count, but to me it seems insane that anyone is willing to say "Yeah that one has gone for so and so" when you've barely got any votes in.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranAccording to BBC, voting in Virginia is being extended by an hour, and everyone on the line by them is allowed to vote no matter how late it goes.
There's speculation that Ohio will do the same.
Romney's lead in Virginia is distressing. But again, if Obama gets Florida Romney can have his Virginia.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.

I ran for a seat in the City Council, which is responsible for running the municipality (=city.) This includes stuff like healthcare and education and so on. There are 59 seats in my city's City Council. 3 people from my party were elected, the same number as last time. I got a very low number of votes and didn't get elected.
Out of the 28 candidates our party had in this election, 17 were under 30 years old, so even though we didn't win more seats it was still positive in many ways.
