The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Politico.com showing a 10% lead for Obama in the first 3% of results in Florida. EDIT: That disappeared bloody fast.

Depends if they need to do a recount but normally by midnight EST it's pretty much finished.

Thanks.

A word of advice, though. Don't say "EST" as it was something obvious to someone who is not from US or Canada. We probably don't have any idea of what you are talking about. Use the more universal term, "GMT -5:00".

Politico's showing an Obama lead in South Carolina. I'm pretty sure that was an outlier.

Hold up. Did the Republican guest on BBC just say President Romney? Geez that's a bit overconfident don't you think?

Please don't say that. There is no president Romney. There can't be until January 20th 2013, and chances are, there won't be ever.

BBC live feed. If you're seeing pre-recorded videos about how the election works you need to click on "Live: BBC US Election Night 2012"

FiveThirdyEight, Nate Silver's blog.

Politico live coverage of the vote count.

I'll be plugging these about once every page or two until someone tells me not to.

Romney's pulled ahead in Virginia, but it's still only 1% of the results so it's still far too early to take away anything for this.

Politico's map has Obama ahead in Florida. If that advantage persist Romney can have Virginia.

There's also NY Times (I think Five Thirty Eight links there) and Huffington Post.

I've been linking to 538, which has the predictions. So yeah, your links are probably more useful now.

I'll be nicking the NY Times election map link and adding it into further linky-posts, again, until someone tells me off.

Politico seems behind the BBC, given it has not yet awarded Kentucky or West Virginia.
