The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

L Mage: So far it's 3:19 Romney's favor. Nothing too shocking though since none of these states are really up for grabs.

God this thread is moving fast.

I can't access Silver's site right now so I couldn't check who he had it called for.

You should also remember that while Silver has Obama's chance of winning stacked rather high, he is expecting a close election. High chance of winning does not mean landslide.

@Gear Leader

Actually, Virginia is pretty uncomfortable with Romney so it could possibly go to Obama.

Early exit polls find that voters are greatly divided on whether the Obama healthcare law should be either fully or partially repealed, Politico reports. The exit poll found that 45% of voters said they think so-called "Obamacare" should be either fully or partially repealed, compared with 47% who want to see the law stay as it is, or further expanded.

God dammit. The conservative media have a lot to answer for. I hate that this is so divisive when it shouldn't be.

[up] Depends if they need to do a recount but normally by midnight EST it's pretty much finished.

Me and the rest of the developed world still don't get why healthcare is an issue in the states but w/e. Give it a decade or so of people having it and they'll change their minds.

@Kostya: Mind, that simply states that people think it should be repealed. No data on if people think it should be repealed and replaced with a public option or simply repealed.

America has a rather huge bloc of the population that considers the government doing anymore than the very bare minimum a bad thing, and believes that the government cannot efficiently provide services.

@L Mage: I'm not too entirely worried. If more than a few traditionally blue states or battleground states trend red, then I might. But southern states trending red is about as surprising as California trending blue.
