The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The Democrat isn't handing out flyers that portray them as having a joint campaign with Romney. There's a difference.

Because she would lose doing shit like that in Connecticut... But again, anyone who would vote the party line, rather than vote by issue, won't be "tricked" by this, because she's not listed as a Democrat...

There's why it's legal in New York, and it's not what Mac Mahon is doing right now.

What Linda is doing actually is legal. Electoral Fusion occurs in Connecticut, and she's listed as an Independent on the ballot...

Oh right, the polling hours are affected by the timezones, right? So we'll probably hear from the east coast first, where there are more swing states.

Pfft. I'm pulling an all-nighter. I'll beat my politics teacher in how long I can stay awake. tongue

Question: Why do so many polling stations use electronic voting? Paper isn't dead yet.

This is correct. If the swing states all go to the same candidate, we could be seeing an early reliable result.

@Swish: It still seems like she's trying to create confusion on purpose so that people who vote for Obama would also vote for her.

I put yeses on those props except for 32. I'm sorry but with creeps like Monsanto and others like them,I want to know if that shit is in my food. Yeah I know G M O's aren't known to be harmful, but who knows.

I guess I take a very deathpigeon/Serocco-esque stance on food.

Wouldn't be surprised if 37 fails just like 29 did back in June.

Based on that it looks like Obama's won New Hampshire.

It still seems like she's trying to create confusion on purpose so that people who vote for Obama would also vote for her.

Perhaps. Alternatively she's trying to present the idea that she's not partisan, and would work across the isle(which no one would believe if she put "Republican" instead of "Independant")...

Most voters who don't educate themselves on the issues, tend to vote party line, and wouldn't be fooled... And those that do educate themselves wouldn't be fooled by the "trickery"...

Edit: It's not my state, so ultimately I don't care...

@Caissa: Which report are you using?

Remember, only the states that have completed their polls are reporting in. So in the east, things should be about done by now.

Approximately 7 minutes until the BBC starts its overnight presentation of the results by the way. EDIT: The link provided two posts above my own.

Results from Indiana's Senate election are coming in.

Richard Mourdock (the Republican candidate) is currently beating Joe Donnelly (the Democrat candidate).

The only swing state that closes in thirty minutes is Virginia.

The way polls close is really weird and not entirely tied to timezones or rationality.

As is Ohio. Almost every sign I've seen in my town is a Romney/Ryan one.

One town really doesnt decide a whole state, though.

I mean. My hometown in missouri has shitloads of pro-republican signage, but my college town 30 minutes away is democratic leaning.

Don't worry about it. New Hampshire is the only Obama leaning state and it looks to be pretty solidly in his favor. Kentucky and Indiana are never going to be pro-Obama so him losing isn't a bad thing at all.

[up][up]Vocal minorities. Ohio is pretty solid for Obama from what I can tell.

[up][up]Indeed. You could live in a district/country/whatever leaning one way, inside a state leaning another way. I found not long ago that this applied to me.

According to the raw nerd math from Nate Silver, Ohio has 90.6% going to Obama.

[up][up]Which is higher than Obama's chances of winning the overall election. Unless Nate Silver's last too predictions were flukes Obama should be fine.
