Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I voted this morning before class. There never seems to be that big a line at the school I do it at, I'm not sure exactly why? But we still use paper ballots that we then feed into the machine. (It works like this; you can vote straight party, and if you decide to vote across the aisle in one area it counts that instead of whatever party you voted. It's handy to have the instructions printed on the ballot!)
But anyway, voted straight Democrat, and where Democrats didn't apply I voted Green or just didn't vote. Actually, I was surprised to see that many Greens on the ballot here in Texas. There were like six or more, and I thought they were having a hard time getting anywhere here. But yeah; those two, Reps and Libertarians. And no way in hell am I ever going to vote Libertarian, for the reasons Fighteer already enumerated on in his own posts. And of course there were a few positions where the vote didn't really matter because there was only one person running. (Some district judges and the like.)
This is hardly related to any discussion happening now, but I feel like reposting* this picture
◊ of Barack's answer to a little girl who wrote about her homosexual parents.
I'm not often heartwarmed by anything related to children (I don't like those to begin with), but it's nice seeing a president showing some humanity.
... Someone pinch me, I'm becoming naive enough to believe a president personally answered a little girl's letter.

That sounds like what we had. I find it strange that you had Greens on your ballot though. I'm in PA which is more liberal overall and we only had the main two and Libertarians in every spot but president which had Stein listed.

No and I don't think I want to.

Why was Wisconsin bolded last page?
Anyone know what major rallies are going on in Chicago tonight if you don't have a ticket to the Mc Cormick place one? I know it might rain, but I still wish it'd been outdoors... would've been easier to attend, Mr. Obama, but of course weather and security concerns.
Obama personally reads and/or responds to 10 letters a night or more.

Her husband owns World Wrestling Entertainment... And 30 years ago, they were adamant that wrestling was not scripted in any way...
As to Linda's scheme...
So... I'm not seeing the issue. She's just being "smarter" about it...

@Marc: I think there's more responses to letters like that floating around the internet, because I remember seeing them awhile ago. So yeah, we have a president right now that bothers to respond to children's letters, and in general has been shown to be really good with them. So yeah, believe it.
@Kostya: Well, this is a state where, right or wrong, we're really freaking loud and stubborn about it. Also we take more joy in extremes I think, so maybe that's influenced it. Because I don't remember that many Greens being on the ballot during the gubernatorial or last presidential election.
Besides, if Texas really is going blue, that opens up opportunities for those who in turn want to go Green!
@Swish: It strikes me as absurd that a person can run under multiple parties. That ought to be illegal (or at least unethical) no matter who does it.
However, implying that she should go on a ballot with Obama when there is a Democratic candidate running for the same office as she is is just plain wrong.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Okay! *pinches you*
Although I think it's understandable; someone in a position like president isn't exactly the kind of person you imagine doing that sort of thing. Even if just because it's such a high position that you'd think other things are put far in front of this sort of thing on the priority list.
That's something they do in New York, I think, something called cross-something or other because there's a bunch of little parties up there. But they don't do it like this lady has done.

This shit is despicable:

@Kostya: her husband is Vince Mc Mahon, owner of the WWE, former owner and backer of the XFL, and a man indicted in so many ethics violations and famed for making the WWE a hellish place to work for unless you suck the hell up to promoters. (if lucrative)
True, the implication is there. But you're acting like people can only vote for one party on the ballot, and can't(or don't) mix their votes.
It's not like the Democratic candidate is not listed as a Democrat on the ballot... I dunno. It might be a sketchy practice, but she's not actually saying/distributing anything that isn't true...

Link to Vince Mc Mahon's page, like I did earlier.
He also turned a local promotion into a worldwide industry, and at least a little of his Bad Boss tendencies are intentional flanderization, so there's that.
Granted, Becoming the Mask is mentioned several times for a reason.

Anyone want to recommend a good live steam? Accepting as many suggestions as you can find, as I'm sure there are others than me in this thread looking for a good stream and we probably have different standards about what we want to see.
I took a look at BBC just now and I think I might want to stick with that one, though I'm also interested in the Comedy Central thing that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are doing - you know, assuming that it'll be streamed online in addition to being on American television, 'cause obviously I don't get Comedy Central here in Finland.
So, links to live streams, please.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.I know that You Tube is going to cover it in their politics
channel. I may turn that on later.
I'll be watching Stewart and/or Colbert but I was not aware they were going to livestream it.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"

I hate this lady now. She should not be allowed to do that. It's dishonest and I feel even if she wins she should be disqualified for it.
