Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I thought this was pretty on-point, on pointing out the flaws in the party, and how they weren't always like this.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold. The Tax Cuts were, for unemployment benefits.
@deathpig: I don't,especially not when there are better leftist parties out there which seem much saner. Green makes more sense, but I didn't see a candidate for them against Feinstein. So that left it down to Emken,Feinstein, and whatever candidate the American Indies threw out,Feinland was the only option.
Not that it matters,Feinstein will win and squander and weasel around anyway. Boxer will have to be the reasonable Senator for the state.
I voted for Feinsten because Emken seemed entirely too assy. In retrospect, I should've just left it blank or written in Bart Simpson.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." Twitter...My own political spectrum?
...No, I use a global political spectrum, which is no more unique to me than anyone's mental political spectrum is since there is not codified center. No one else makes the disclaimer that they're center isn't the same as everyone else's, so I don't see why I should.
Plus, it's far more reasonable to have global spectrum than have to change to a new spectrum whenever you change regions, and be completely unable to compare politicians from different places.
you're making the assumption that people in Silicon Valley have the same set of needs and wants as indigenous tribes in South America.
"Never let the truth get in the way of a good story." TwitterWell, since this is the thread about the American election, maybe it's best to define the centre as somewhere around Obama. For most of the world, Obama would be quite firmly on the Right, a little bit past Centre-Right parties; the US doesn't have a mainstream Left-wing party at all. But as I said, for the US, the Democrats are the Left and Republicans the Right.
Just let's not assume that threads that are not explicitly about the US will use the US spectrum.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.@ch00: Doesn't mean that they can still be on the same liberal-conservative scale, or chart, if the case may be.
@Besty: I don't change my spectrum depending on where I'm talking, and, even if I did speak of thing in the terms of the American Spectrum, I would still treat Obama like a conservative since he is to me.

You're from Ohio, dude. Your vote statistically matters thousands of times more than people from other states.
Forgive me for asking, but are you a member of any minority groups? Ethnic, sexual, whatever?

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Okay. And did you vote third party? If so, at what levels (House, President, state, etc.)?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.@Taoist: Yes. I voted Green for President and House. There were no Green candidates lower than that, and, given their stance on higher education, I don't trust Libertarians as the Regent for CU.
@Compy: Polyamory is just as immutable as homosexuality.
I'm dating six people, but I'm open. As I said, polyamorous.
I found it rather amusing that most of the Democratic candidates here in NC would have been firmly considered Republicans just a few years ago. Most of them are pro-life and either against gay marriage or remain silent on the matter, and firmly support most of the "right wing" stances on defense and justice. A good many of the Republican candidates however have adopted a slash and burn policy on education and infrastructure, and are very loud on voicing that X person is a democrat, ergo a secret socialist. The only major exceptions I've seen are the small time candidates running for county positions, but then again outside of their jobs a lot of them are friends so you don't see such extreme rhetoric coming from them.
edit- Several candidate's websites listed here.
