The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Dammit Sledge couldn't you have moved to South Carolina first?

You have more trust in Obama than I do...
I trust him to be a politician and a president. Which means we need liberals in the House, Senate, and Supreme Court plus large amounts of public outcry to get him or his Democratic successor to back down and undo that shit.

Romney would not back down. Romney would see protests against that section of the NDAA as an opportunity to use that section of the NDAA. You don't achieve anything progressive in this country until popular outrage forces the politicians to yield, but how Democratic and Republican politicians respond to popular outrage is very different. Remember how much Bush got away with BEFORE that NDAA was passed?

@3of4: I read that. I agreed with Serocco's general point, but not all the details, reasons, or intensity. However, I feel like many of you were being apologists for the bad things that Obama has done. Glossing over them and making excuses for them.

Florida's pretty much the only state that's really up for grabs, at least according to fivethirtyeight.

Don't forget that low-level elections can come down to relatively small numbers of voters. Even if your vote is irrelevant on a federal level, you still may be able to make a difference at the state or local level.

Furthermore, I think Guantanamo must be destroyed.

[up][up][up] What was Serocco's general point?

[up][up] So, can we pencil Nevada, Colorado and Virginia for Obama?

[up][up] THIS THIS THIS. Presidential elections will matter a lot less if we don't flip that House.

@Sledge: and Ohio, and with Ohio, Obama has it in the bag.

No candidate will be perfect.

I voted for the ones that are more likely to do (and to be able to do) what I would prefer the legislative and executive branches of government to do.

That is why I voted for Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Tim Kaine, and Gerry Connolly.

[up][up], [up][up][up][up] Nevada 93.4%, Ohio 90.6%, Colorado 79.7%, Virginia 79.4%.

In retrospect, this was a stupid post, the information is on the website and though I was ninja'd, a simple confirming yes would have improved it much.

I must be catching "Pundit syndrome".

I'm pretty sure Romney will get North Carolina too. What're the figures on that?

@deathpigeon.

I'm not apologizing him. I'm merely looking at the other guy and figuring that I'd simply choose the "lesser evil."

Standing on principle is good and fine, but if standing on it amounts to changing exactly nothing its not really worth a thing.

You can always say "no!" and pout.

And frankly, none of your 3rd party candidates are viable without a change in your political culture.

Going "anything but Obama" to the left is just as bad as "anything but Obama" on the right.

Eh, 80% is pretty much certain. I mean, it MIGHT not, but that's pretty unlikely.

Obama's still favoured in Ohio and Pennsylvania? Even with the voter suppression efforts?

If he overcomes those, stick a fork in Romney, that sucker's done.

I'm really hating myself right now for voting blue in solid blue as an absentee instead of helping out the big swing in swing county.

Damnit if that death penalty isn't overturned,I've wasted everything.

friend in the army posted this today

also i voted. had to go through the provisional voting because i've been permanent vote-by-mail, but I think my ballot is still getting sent to Georgia. the polling place was pretty empty, but I live in a quiet area and there were like 1051059 polling places I passed once I started off to work, so I'm guessing it was all distributed well.

Florida's pretty much a dead heat.

Just like how Obama isn't perfect, those third party candidates aren't the great white hopes you're making them out to be either.

I'm disappointed in anyone who votes for a third party right now. It might not matter in this election, but what if this was another election? What if Obama lost? Would you seriously want Romney up there?

Like most of everyone else has said, principles only go so far.

Yknow, this election has really gotten me thinking about the people who tend to align themselves with particular parties, and it almost seems like general right wings and general left wings just... think differently. Like, completely.
