Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

...and there is this
analysis, "borrowed" from a post on the Troper Updates thread.
Expect a long wait, and a lot of posts filling the gap.

Keep Rolling OnI voted at 8 AM this morning. It wasn't too crowded at my polling place, fortunately. Now it's just a waiting game.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Someone asked What time do voting location open/close?
Well, it's well into election day by now, but I'll just post this:
As for the waiting, I can do that as easily at work as at home. No point in hanging around biting my fingernails when there won't be any official results until much later in the day.
If anyone was doing exit polls around my voting place, I didn't see it. They didn't even have "I Voted" stickers, which was a disappointment. Very minimalistic. And nobody asked for my ID, either.
I don't know that I would be taking these minor data points as any kind of prediction of the election result.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The second
small New Hampshire town has voted - Obama won it at a margin greater than 2008. The other town was a tie; Obama won that in 2008.
Someone several pages back asked about Ballot Question #1 in Virginia and its hidden pitfalls.
My father, a local government lawyer, has this to say about the hidden pitfalls about Ballot Question #1: most importantly, it enshrines in the constitution of Virginia that property is a sacred right on the level of life, liberty, etc, which has never happened before. Also, I'm fairly certain it places really worrisome restrictions on local governments, who traditionally get the shaft whenever the state government does anything, because they're extremely limited in their fundraising abilities. Essentially (for example), the amendment prevents a local government from using eminent domain except in a very limited set of circumstances, which could cause some hidden problems down the line; court cases are going to skyrocket if/when it passes.
Bob Dylan predicts Obama landslide.
I've voted! It wasn't too crowded here at my polling place (i.e. voting location).
- Obama-Biden
- Kaine
- Connolly
- Proposed Constitutional Amendment #1: No
- Proposed Constitutional Amendment #2: Yes
- Parks and Park Facilities Bonds: Yes
- Public Safety Bonds: Yes
- Public Library Bonds: Yes
- Storm Drainage Improvement Bonds: No (I'm leery about the levee; I'd rather err on the side of caution, despite not having researched this topic)
Voted all blue and to raise the salaries of out state Senators (from 12k to 25.5 k).
Also, if anyone's undecided, just remind them how much it'd piss off Donald Trump if they voted for Obama.
Less than 6% chance that that happens.
Fivethrityeight is calling a 90.9% chance of Obama victory.
