The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So when does voting begin/end?

Varies from state to state... But the general "standard" seems to be 7am to 7pm.

Depending on whether or not the "experts" are right on Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Florida,(meaning it's decisive and not close like the media is portraying those states) we'll know who won as early as 11pm est... Otherwise the call could be as late as 2am est, if not later...

The NDAA had over 90 Senators supporting it; the President can't veto anything that gets more than 74 votes in the Senate. There is nothing he could have done to keep it from passing.

I'm aware it would've been overridden (barring a SOPA-style event to very suddenly render it toxic...which he could've kicked off). Still, he could've at least been on the record opposing it in a real way.

[up]Fine

One day until US Election Day, Palin finally 'endorses' Romney

In short, this is Palin's “last minute” endorsement given to Romney. The Huffington Post reports that Palin penned a lengthy statement of many paragraphs. However, there's no mention of Romney until one reads down to the fourteenth paragraph.

[up] Hm. Really, I don't see much news in that. No offence, though I am surprised there was no official thing, even though we all obliviously knew she was on his side.

Goodnight, good luck, and see you when the polls close

My "restoring a bit of faith in humanity" moment from this election was when Chris Christie acted like an actual human being who didn't have time for campaigning when his state was getting wrecked by Sandy.

Also, fortunate news for whoever wins: There's a recovery beginning, so whoever wins this election will strengthen their party's hand for 2016.

The worst moment of this election season was when a candidate ended a speech by mentioning God. Come on, you shouldn't have to do that stuff in the 21st century when about 15% of Americans have no religious affiliation, more than 5% are atheist or agnostic, and a whole lot more would like to see religion kept away from politics. When less than 10% of the most highly regarded members of the scientific community believe in God, maybe it's time for candidates to stop including it in every speech as a matter of course.

That was the worst moment of this election season?

Not Todd Akin denying that women could be impregnated by Rape?

Not the whole Benghazi debacle?

Not Rick Perry forgetting which federal agency he would eliminate?

Or anything Rick Perry did and/or said for that matter?

I think you have some skewed priorities.

EDIT: And politicians don't care what the scientific community thinks.

Well, OK, I'll grant you the rape business. That whole thing was worse than ignoring the nonreligious.

As for Benghazi, I don't think the attack itself counts. The Republican reaction to it does, though, but I don't think that's as bad as the fact that there are only one or two mainstream candidates who are openly nonreligious. If you think it's wrong to lie, how about this: demographic statistics about religion and nonreligion in the US imply that at least 5% and probably something closer to 10 or 15% of Congress and Presidential candidates should be nonreligious. How many still claim to believe in God?

Same goes for most lies in the campaign.

The rape thing and other issues regarding women's rights, though, I must say are worse than ignoring the second-largest religious (or in this case nonreligious) group in the country.

Dayum Biden, that was fuckin' animated.

I mean, there are some policy things where I'm "eh" about Biden (copyright legislation stuff), but honestly, I've been impressed with him as VP. He really gets a bad rap that he doesn't deserve.

And remember at one point there was a good chance this man could have been the Republican Presidential Candidate.

Actually: that'a my amusement... the shoddy ads. So much money thrown at them... so much cheese on lies and spin: all to horrible soundtracks. It's actually quite funny how bad some of that background music is. [lol]

Oh, I'm not at all fond of Rick Perry. And as for other religious lunatics, I think I did mention that the most scary bit for me was Santorum. (Though again, the rape comments are actually worse; I had just managed to blissfully forget them when I was writing the post and now I'm again painfully aware of that issue.)

Romney's not much better, though; he believes that when Jesus returns he'll reign from Jerusalem and Missouri, which was apparently where the Garden of Eden was. And Romney believes that a convicted fraud found (with the help of an angel) two gold tablets containing the true word of God. And he was brought up believing in his church's official doctrine that black skin colour is a punishment from God for the sins of the ancestors of black or brown (or yellow and so on) people. That doctrine was later abandoned - in 1978, 'cause that's how progressive Romney's cult is. He believes that Native Americans were descended from a banished tribe of Israel; and again, the ones with the darker or redder skin were turned into that colour because they sinned against God.

I think the worst was when a candidate literally referred to rape as "the rape thing" in a speech, and then went on to say that he opposes abortion even in those cases.
