The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So I have a Romney-Ryan campaign sign near my house. It looked like this

This morning the poster was torn off.

A little after that someone gratified "Romney/Ryan will save America" on where the poster once was.

Them when I came back from schools the sign now read, "Romney/Ryan will save 1% of America".

Now someone has Whitewashed the original graffiti and has rewritten "Romney/Ryan will save America".

Yeah but if he does that they can just run attack ad after attack ad slamming him and Obama can't even deny it without being a baldfaced liar.

He doesn't have to. "You would prefer to torch the Fifth Amendment and give the government free license to indefinitely detain US citizens without charge to pass your budget a few days faster?" would have sufficed. Wonderfully. To all parties.

I mean goddamn, that's like a prime way to get free points with paranoid Republicans. And I know this because the reps and senators here...wait for it...got free points with paranoid Republicans by doing that.

Hasn't the whole detention thing been declared illegal or something by a judge somewhere? I could swear we discussed that already.

2. Prepare to move to Canada. Or Australia. Or Britain. Actually, stick with Australia, they're the only vaguely liberal government of the bunch.

Australia is one of the two developed countries to reject Kyoto. I'm not particularly happy about that.

The upright side of me sighs at how bad the political discourse has gotten.

The trollish side of me is entertained by these shenanigans.

Interesting article about how demographics are slowly etching the Republicans out of the presidency and analyzes the whys.

It's not from a circle-jerk website like Daily Kos, either, but from Politico.

Then wait sixteen hours.

I'm cautiously optimistic.

EDIT: Unnamed top Bush official on his party: “We’re in a demographic boa constrictor and it gets tighter every single election.”

Bush tried to fix that with an attempt at immigration reform in 2004/2005 before his party turned on him.

There have been indications that Bush would have been a lot better in regards to immigration, particularly that from Mexico, if not for 9/11 and the terror that inspired. *shrug* People took that fear from all sides and ran with it.

@Pykrete: The NDAA had over 90 Senators supporting it; the President can't veto anything that gets more than 74 votes in the Senate. There is nothing he could have done to keep it from passing.

BBC poll shows that most of the world wants Obama to win. The only country among those polled that favours Romney is Pakistan.

Also, if you go to Nate Silver's blog now, you'll notice that he's changed his prediction for Florida; it's going blue now.

Hell, if my memory isn't entirely rusty, Dubya actually was more interested in domestic affairs, and got sucked into a godawful war. (... kind of reminds me of a Republican LBJ, in that regard)

He didn't get sucked into a godawful war; he demanded it. The Iraq War, that is. The Afghanistan War was not gawdawful; we were running that one very well until Iraq got into the picture, thanks to the demands of those neocons advising GWB.

And Nixon campaigned on maintaining segregation and being hard on communism.

Campaigns aren't always truthful.

CCN's interactive election map. Click once on a swing state to turn it blue, click again to make it red.

Go ahead and see what happens if you take the default CNN Electoral Map and mark Ohio and Florida as blue, which is how Nate Silver suggests they'll probably go. Just those two states and Obama has won the election.
