The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I think any comedy segment Herman Cain did after he was out of the running was awesome.

Favorite moment was "Read the transcript."

92% chance. Highest 538's had Obama's chances all year, including pre-Denver.

Well if he really did get a boost from Sandy then the number is likely. He was already back to his pre-debate chance and that boosted him even higher according to most people.

The smoking guy in the Hermann Cain add sticks out to me. Hermann was a twit, but at least he was an entertaining twit.

I love anything with Herman Cain. Say what you will about his politics, but the man will quote Pokemon - and then cite the source in his speech, and on top of that, he's genuinely funny.

That was my favorite part of this campaign. He seems like a cool guy.

Herman Cain was definitely the high point of the election for me. Really, everything just went straight to shit when all the entertaining crazies went away and we were left with a boring sociopath.

I don't think I was paying attention to the election at all until after Cain and Bachmann dropped out so I can't really comment much on them.

Okay, so for everyone saying turning down the NDAA is a death sentence?

Look up Oregon here and here. I'd be rather surprised if any of those people lose their seat.

Hell, DeFazio and Merkley did...wait for it...public statements on exactly why they voted the way they did, specifically citing the offending passages, and immediately got a shitload of support. Not even Art Robinson is trying to bring it up because he knows how fast he'd be shot down doing it.

So I repeat: that thing got signed because the people who signed it wanted it. End of story.

Do you understand the concept of gerrymandering?

They can do that because, well, there's no chance in hell they'll ever have a competitive election. The Democrats left after the 2010 midterms were the ones in the most deep-blue districts.

And they're not Senators or Presidents.

Yeah but they're in a blue region and aren't the POTUS. Obama is going to get trashed for that regardless of what he said or intended, just look at the stupidity that was Didn'tgate. He already has a ton of people screaming how he's un-American and anti-military. Might as well not give them legitimate evidence of him opposing something crucial to the military.

Yep.

Technically first Tuesday after first Monday, but it's usually always the first Tuesday.

Might as well not give them legitimate evidence of him opposing something crucial to the military.

Alternatively, might as well do the right goddamn thing and get the same amount of bad publicity among people who already wanted nothing to do with him, and then make a public statement as to why for the ones who were on the fence — seeing how the reasoning behind it is a complete no-brainer.

[up][up][up]Why is it Tuesday? It just seems incredibly stupid since Sunday or Saturday are the days when most people don't have work.

[up][up]Yeah but if he does that they can just run attack ad after attack ad slamming him and Obama can't even deny it without being a baldfaced liar. Look, you people that get uptight about this seem to have some weird notions about honor and integrity. There is no honor in politics and if Obama has to pass this to stay in power then unfortunately he has to pass it. Rather than waste energy hating him I suggest you attack those that created that bill in the first place and put him in this terrible position.

Most Americans do not get paid time off for Election Day. Kids get out of school, though. Mostly.

Why is it Tuesday? It just seems incredibly stupid since Sunday or Saturday are the days when most people don't have work.

I saw something about this on the BBC. I don't recall exactly, but it was something to do with travel distances back in the 19th century meaning that getting from your home to a polling place could be a very long trip. Travelling or voting on the Sabbath was out of the question back then, and I think Saturday (?) was your typical market day in rural areas. Allowing Monday for travelling, Tuesday was the most practical day left.
