Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

When in doubt about the election, do two things.
1. Read Five Thirty Eight.
2. Prepare to move to Canada. Or Australia. Or Britain. Actually, stick with Australia, they're the only vaguely liberal government of the bunch.
I checked my local polling place for info on who I can vote for. No data about state elections, but I found out that "Nimrod Y. U. Allen the third" from the "I.D.E.A" party.
I giggled at the name.
To be fair Mc Cain was actually still fairly moderate for a long time, selecting Palin was the problem there.
I could understand that since Mc Cain was a reasonable politician. I disagree with him immensely but he was a man worth respecting. I can't say the same for the latest batch of primary candidates the Republicans put out.
Also people arguably did learn and supported Obama but then the Republicans fucked him over so badly that they thought Obama was an idiot and blamed him for their obstructionism.

To be honest, I think "revenge" is a nice, solid reason. "Love of country" is... well... it Tastes Like Diabetes and is too amorphous, so can have "salesman" attached.

First for me. It's funny. Two years ago I would have voted for the Tea Party candidates if I was old enough.
edit: This is adorable!

Oklahoma GOP seeks to keep 'reddest state' moniker

Gary Johnson was a Republican, so he's adamant about slashing the social programs. He's still to the left of Obama and Romney in terms of foreign affairs and Marijuana.
I'd prefer Anderson or Stein myself, though.
