Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yes. They do.
They also dont have the sheer electoral support, and even if EVERYONE voted for the parties they actuallky believed in, we'd simply be splitting the vote 6 ways and the ones with the most airtime would still likely get top honors.
Just because a Jill Stein victory is theoretically possible does not change the fact that with a winner take all electoral college and a decided republican majority, a vote for jill stein in missouri is a vote for Mitt Romney.

Let's be realistic about what the president actually does, and what the optimal options for the executive branch are given any specific scenario.
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.God I hope so.

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this. The problem here seems to be that Serocco expects miracles to happen. Change happens slowly, our system was pretty much designed that way. Also, just because you get your miracle candidate into office doesn't mean they can do everything right away, because there's several other hundred people they're having to deal with.
It's called CHECKS AND BALANCES. The cornerstone of our current system, meant to prevent the president from gaining too much power, and to do the same to the Congress. Which means that no matter who gets the office, they're still going to be competing with these other guys over what gets done.
And frankly? Obama really does give a fuck about what happens to us. He's been good on LGBT issues, he's been good on issues regarding Native Americans, he continued to push the ACA even if he had compromise on it, and he's holding to the promise to pull our troops out of Afghanistan on the like. The first thing he did was sign the Lily Ledbetter Act into law. Hell, he even repealed DADT, which is a big deal here. And frankly, I'm from Texas and sick of Republican bullshit. So yes, I'm voting Democrats. They're the ones that are in these two groups: 1) Those that give a damn about what happens to people, and 2) Those with a realistic chance of winning.
I'll consider voting for Greens when they get the kind of support that's necessary to prop up their power. (Hell, I doubt there are any Green affiliated politicians in this state right now.)
I don't expect miracles. I'm just going to vote for the guy who I think actually cares about what happens to me and to other people. And you, Serocco, can vote for whoever you want. Just keep in mind that even the super great people you mentioned would be entirely unable to achieve everything they wanted just because they won the presidency. It's just not realistic. And we need some realism in politics.
I never liked Obama to begin with. I saw his voting record, and as soon as I found out that he voted "present" on Yay or Nay votes... well, that was the big clue about how I figured he'd turn out as a president.
House elects President. Senate elects Vice.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. Not with our two party system. And if it did I think the whole system would collapse into uncomfortable spasms. Do we even have something in place to deal with that? Like... we all have to vote again or something?

Anyways!
You see all those stupid political ads everywhere? Such as the one to the left of my add post screen right now, from Independence Virginia PAC, claiming that Tim Kaine cut $120 million in "education funding to northern VA"?
Well, you can take those silly PAC names and then type them into a site like the Sunlight Foundation. For example, for this group: http://reporting.sunlightfoundation.com/outside-spending/committee/independence-virginia-pac/C00515155/
Positive: 0% Supports Democrats: $0.00 Supports Republicans: $0.00
2012-11-02 INDEPENDENCE VIRGINIA PAC KAINE, TIMOTHY MICHAEL (D) Oppose $300,000.00 VA Online/Digital advertising.
etc. etc. etc.; all it does is oppose Tim Kaine
2012-07-26 $250,000.00 Perry, Bob Self-Employed Houston TX
2012-08-22 $250,000.00 Perry, Bob Self-Employed Houston TX
2012-09-05 $250,000.00 Perry, Bob Self-Employed Houston TX
2012-09-14 $250,000.00 Perry, Bob Self-Employed Houston TX
2012-08-29 $25,000.00 Fazakerley, Gregory Self-Employed The Plains VA
2012-08-06 $25,000.00 Schar, Dwight Self-Employed West Palm Beach FL
2012-10-02 $25,000.00 Gilliam, Richard Cumberland Development Keswick VA
2012-08-01 $10,000.00 Friess, Foster Self-Employed Jackson WY
Looks like this is a playpen for jerks. It's those jerks Sheldon Adelson (best known for being Gingrich's sugar daddy), Bob Perry (best known for the infamous "Swift Boat ads"), and Foster Freiss (best known for being Santorum's sugar daddy, if I recall correctly).
Also, note that of these top funders, only one of them is in Virginia. It's like their money is carpetbagging.
I personally support Kaine, instead of our current governor/asshat Bob Mc Donnell.
The Fine Bros put up an extra-long Teens/Elders React video
about the election. It's worth watching.
@Serocco: I vote tomorrow. Pennsylvania doesn't have early voting, although I suppose I could have requested an absentee ballot. But I didn't.

I'm too young.
Romney: We're "one day away" from victory
I don't know, but I want a Romney/Biden sitcom based around this premise.
