Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Extra day of voting possible in New York
NY Times Michael Barbaro and USA Today Jackie Kucinich report that right now at a Romney rally, staffers are not letting people leave, even though people and children are getting frostbite.

Very big Daydream Believer. "That's not knowledge, that's a crapshoot!" -Al Murray "Welcome to QI" -Stephen FryOh, Romney.
I volunteered this afternoon at my local Obama for America office to help canvass neighborhoods to get out the vote. It was surprisingly pleasant. Most of the people we met were very enthusiastic about voting for Obama, and I used my personal iPad to help someone look up his registration to make sure he knew where to vote. It was very organized and professional.

According to the weather site, it wasn't raining, but there has been a steady wind between 6-10mph. It also looks like the official temperature at 7pm (when Romney started speaking) was 41F, dropping to 39F at 10pm.
Edit: Looking at the NWS Windchill chart on NOAA's website, 40 degree weather with a wind of 5-10mph could produce frostbite in half an hour, due to windchill being 34F.

"I don't know how I do it. I'm like the Mr. Bean of sex." -DrunkscriblerianHey, I just got done volunteering too. One thing I was surprised by is that their voter information isn't as sophisticated as it's cracked up to be. Several people on the list had moved.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySo maybe when Romney comes to my school tomorrow around noon, there will still be ample parking available?
Nice.

Sort of. Seems to me like the people were penned in an area with only one or two "authorized" exits, and people couldn't get to those exits and thus were trying to just leave by hopping the waist-high "fences" that surround the area and being told they couldn't do that, and that they'd have to stay...
They're "penned in" as a security precaution so that Secret Service knows where people are, thus they know a threat is possible if people are in "unauthorized" areas...
If staffers were telling people they couldn't leave the Rally, that's false imprisonment... But none of the reports seem to suggest that they weren't telling people they couldn't leave... Just that they couldn't leave the way they were trying to(by walking out through random areas into restricted zones, instead of trudging their way through all the people to get out the "right" way)...
Far as I know they're not allowed to prevent people from leaving a venue. For any reason. Once you enter, you should be free to leave out the exit at any time for any reason.
@Shima: I was referring to the suing for the early voting thing, not the early voting themselves. I mean, I don't think they can get a fast enough response at this point to be effective in any way.

Oh right. The 2008 wave of blue means that it'll be mostly dems up for grab. Oiy vey.
So basically, the only thing that matters is 2016.
