The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Romney burned the Book of Mormon on live TV in order to gain the support of edgy teenagers as well as people who're worried about that whole religion thing he apparently has.

Or maybe nothing happened and we've actually been talking about Obama's decent-sized lead on Romney. I won't tell you which is true, because I'm CNN and both of these claims are equally valid to me.

[up]*whatever Obama's erased the lead Romney gained post-debate in the swing states with exception to Florida and North Carolina.

How likely is Obama to take Florida anyway. That's always a hard one for the Dems.

Florida's ridiculously close, but looks to be leaning Romney. But Obama still looks more likely to take the electoral college as a whole, even without Florida.

If he can take Ohio he's more or less won. He'll still need a state or two but I don't really expect him to lose all the swing states or anything.

This has been posted before but there you go.

Also, unlike CNN's interactive map at the time they published it, Nate Silver doesn't consider Wisconsin much of a swing state: Instead, he says it's going to Obama.

Obama's over 50% in Wisconsin and above the MoE - shouldn't that be lean Obama, not a toss-up? N.C. is closer than Wisconsin yet it's lean-Romney.

[up]More than likely it's because while the polls show Obama ahead, those polls don't "mesh" with the fact that Scott Walker won the recall election...

As such most analysts are afraid of actually saying that Obama's going to win the state outright...

I'd argue the validity of those results, while he may have "won", I remember hearing his campaign pretty much engaged in voter suppression, especially among the youth vote.

This election reminds me a bit to much of '04.

FireThirtyEight now has Mourdock losing. It also looks like the three most likely outcomes for the Senate are 53 Dems (exactly the same as now, when you count Dem-leaning independents), 52, and 54.

Obama has a better chance of taking Florida than Romney does Ohio.

538 has Florida at 46% chance of Obama, it's the closest state in the country.

In interesting (and unsurprising) news, Dave Spence, republican candidate for Missouri Governor who is running as a "job creator and businessman" is under allegations of somewhere in the neighborhood of 400,000 dollars in tax evasion for his business.

@Tomu: John Husted, known for ignoring court orders in order to roll back early voting, sent out a thing about the requirements for certain voting forms. Basically, it's now the onus of the voter to make sure that they explain what form of ID they used to vote with, and if they fill it out incorrectly, the vote is ignored/destroyed.

Oh joy.

I mean, all the polls say (regardless of the "momentum" argument) that Obama should win pretty decisively. If he loses, it'll almost certainly be due to these ridiculous voter suppression efforts.

Why has he not been removed from his job for corruption and ignoring the court then? I'm pretty sure this is jailable/contempt of court or something. :/
