The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Michele kindly return to your kitchen. God doesn't want women running his chosen people. The Bible says so.

[up]So now she's Joan of Arc? Does she know what happened to Joan of Arc?

Thinking on it more I just realized Joan of Arc was later declared innocent and is now a saint. That's not the outcome I want...

Incidentally, Joan of Arc is the only person yet to be burned as a witch and then declared a saint.

That's not the most remarkable achievement of a saint, though. To become a saint, you have to be proven to have performed a miracle. When the Church was desperate to canonise Thomas Aquinas, they came up with this (according to QI:)

On his deathbed [Thomas] was claimed to say "I fancy a herring" and some pilchards were brought instead. He said they were the best herrings he'd ever had, which the Catholic Church interpreted as a miracle by saying that the pilchards had turned to herrings in his mouth.

Sorry for the off-topic. I just wanted to share a funny, hoping it wouldn't start a derail.

It sure pales to Saint Val, who toppled a dictator, invented cold fusion and got nookie from Elizabeth Shue.

I remember that episode.

Another saint put her cape down and it grew to cover a hill where she built a church I think.

She also could turn used bath water into beer. [lol]

Hurricane Sandy helped Obama politically, Karl Rove says

I think he might be right.

Mitt Romney At Stanford University: Classmates Recall Republican Candidate In College

Of course, I would take this with a grain of salt.

I think rove is right as well. Mainly because it made Obama look incredibly good and Romney like the out of touch sociopath he always appears to be.

Really? Obama still has a .1% lead in the poll averages. I don't think it's helped him at all especially with all these ads that are starting to hit the air.

[up]

The poll averages dont matter so much as the individual state polls. And the state polls say Obama is likely to win somewhere between 280-300 electoral votes. which is a crushing defeat for Romney.

Arkasas (4 Score & 7 Years Ago)
#36598: Nov 3rd 2012 at 7:15:40 PM

[up][up]He's up by 2.2% in the 538 averages. (Coincidentally, that's the margin of error.)

Rove is claiming that Pennsylvania and Minnesota are in play; are the Republicans really that delusional? Or are they cheating?

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#36599: Nov 3rd 2012 at 7:16:56 PM

[up][up]That's a crushing defeat? It's pretty much one large state more than Romney has. A crushing defeat would be something akin to the 2008 election where Obama had almost twice the amount of electoral votes as Mc Cain.

[up]Does RCP weight their averages differently or something? They're a lot closer according to them.

PA is actually a battleground state if recent polls are to be believed.
