The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Online viewing: I'm sure most major news outlets will have a livestream of some kind.

[up][up]He might be right. Obama and Romney are neck and neck and this storm is likely to keep a lot of Democrats from voting.

It's okay, I often read the comments on an article without reading the actual article because those are frequently more interesting.

[up]Incredibly interesting in light of recent events.

State Supermajority in California? I've heard....mixed reviews about Cali Democrats. What would they do with a supermajority?

Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.

They'd do better than the Republicans that's for sure.

But because California is so large and diverse (A democrat from San Francisco, Sacremento, and Los Angles are very different people) its hard to say.

Things that I find hilarious: Deb Fischer's ads againt Kerrey are the most ringing endorsement he could receive in my book. It's all "he'll raise taxes on the rich and supports Obama and Obamacare and he's a New York liberal". And my response is "sign me up!"

One downside to the Republicans being so bald-faced in their dishonesty and scheming is that you can't really run on morality anymore. Conservatives have a very tenuous grasp on that noun. [lol]

I like it when Chris Christie is reasonable. :)

Recent Senate Developments:

Nebraska went from certain Republican victory, to leans Republican.

Massachusetts, Indiana, Ohio, North Dakota, and Pennsylvania all became toss-ups.

And as of now so did Arizona

I heard from Coast To Coast AM that the media is trying to portray this as a really close race, when in reality, the gap between votes is nigh impossible for Romney to overcome. But then again, I rarely listen to CTCAM.

Krugman wrote a column about how the media is making the race look closer than it actually is 'cause drama attracts viewers.

That's certainly possible.

It's because the media is partisan...

Fox News has a vested interest in saying the race is close, because it'll get the base out to vote for Romney, and thus actually make the race close.

The other stations are vested in keeping Obama in the White House, and thus need the Democrat voters to think the race is close(meaning, Obama could lose), so that they don't have a situation where Democrats in swing states think the election is over, and find out an hour after the polls close that their state swung red because they didn't show up...

It's essentially a repeat of 2000 that the media outlets are trying to repeat and not repeat, respectively.

Well, if you follow Nate Silver's math (who's basically being a non-partisan statistican here), he's basically got it that the Senate is 9 out of 10 going to remain in the Democrat's hands, and 4 in 5 Obama is going to win the race.

So yeah, the Media's probably just riling shit up that don't needed to be riled.

[up]Though that makes sense to. But in reality, the race is hilariously unclose. But to prevent it from flopping it has to look close.

True but Nate Silver has been called a one trick pony.

I (mostly) agree with him though.
