Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Anyone else fear this is connected to Mitt's hawkish stance on Russia?

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016![]()
Somehow I doubt that's what most people think of when they think of change.
It still annoys me that people can't seem to recognize that when things weren't regulated we entered the Great Depression and then about a decade and a half after we deregulated we entered the Great Recession. Gee, I wonder if there's a connection!
That is a bizarre reason. The Mormons never did anything to anybody from what I know of history.
It's not like Mitt's the Mormon equivalent of the Pope or something. He doesn't have a lot of control over them.

Xenophobia doesn't need cromulent reasons.
And they had some squabbles with some Native America Tribes.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016Mitt Romney is a Mormon Bishop, though for them it's not as high a position as it would be in most branches of Christianity. My understanding is that he's higher in the Mormon hierarchy than a priest in mainstream Christianity. Look him up in Wikipedia and you'll find that he's held some pretty high positions locally, though the Mormon hierarchy seems to be really spread out.

Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.
Practically all Mormon men are priests of some form; Bishop is merely the highest rank in the Aaronic priesthood. Romney's not actually in charge of anything at this time, although I think he used to run a Stake in Massachusetts.
Honestly, I'm surprised that nobody has made up a storm about having an actual priest in the Oval Office.
If I'm remembering right a mormon bishop is sort of like a regional head or is in charge of the missionaries. I'm recalling this from a half-remembered post on reddit, granted, but I'm pretty sure they don't have any real power outside of their area.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016@Kostya: Excepting the ones who hate Mormons. Oh, and the Left. Don't forget about them.
@Braeburn: We've also had a few agnostics in the White House, up to and including one Abraham Lincoln.
In other news, the way the Mormon priesthood works is that at 12, you can become a Deacon in the Aaronic priesthood, a Teacher at 14, and a Priest at 16. At 18 you can become an Elder in the Melchizedek priesthood, and once you get married you can become a High Priest, after which you can become a Bishop in the Aaronic priesthood. To the best of my knowledge, Romney has never held the higher ranks of Seventy or Apostle, and has certainly never been President of the Church, which is the Mormon Pope.
In other news, I recommend we stop with this Mormon priesthood derail now.
That's still hotly debated and not truly confirmed.
We've had Theists and we've had Deists and that's all that is known for sure.
Although Aaron Burr was an Atheist, so theirs that.

And Mitt's father was also a moderate Republican who decried far-right extremists, so clearly he didn't pick up everything from his family.
I think it was his wife.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016So, I have a question. I want to follow the election live, but I don't have TV at my place (I live in a place with terrible broadcast coverage, and cable is expensive when you're a college student and not sharing with your roommates). Absent of going to someone else's place and/or some kind of election party, does anyone know of any free live coverage of the election?
